A8 delayed then hard shift, 1st to 2nd.

Sometimes I get a delayed than hard shift from 1st to 2nd in my A8. Is that a common thing?

if it's the very first 1-2 shift after sitting all night? then yes....it's common.

Heavy on the throttle seems to smooth it out.

I going to have to agree with you on that one. I always try to baby it on that 1st shift. But the other morning the wife drove it to work. She punched it as soon as she left the driveway...I didn't hear any weird shifting. it held first gear for quite a while. I'm going have to try that (I just care about the neighbors). She, not too much.

I use manual mode in mornings then auto after 1st 2nd shift. Or rev twice in park.

I let the car warm up and let it idle drive down the driveway/street, I go gentle for about a mile. Always that hard shift into second, guess that's just how they are.

I have this as well. took my son to school this morning and the line to get in was long. The constant stop and go had me doing quite a few 1-2 shifts and it was thumping hard. Glad to see im not the only one this happens to.

I always let it idle down, then 1st gear out of driveway, right hand turn, 25 yards down street and lug into 2nd to the first stop sign. Then it lurches again into 2nd, then 3rd is fine, as I continue for another 200 yards to next stop. I make a hard left turn and get the rear end groan...

Change the diff fluid. it's really easy. That problem will be solved.

I've taken it to the dealer twice for this and they couldn't reproduce. I ignored it for awhile. I have an appointment for the trans cooler contact recall this week and they said they will check and flush rear diff also.
