You're not crazy at all.....Red Line fluids set the bar, nothing better.

Bumping old thread.

Planning to do differential fluid change soon. Thinking Redline 75w90 or OEM (but OEM fluid seems to be little confused.)

I’m really surprised at the low miles you guys are changing the rear diff fluid. My 18 SS has 3300 miles on it.

Haven’t changed mine yet

My 1LE is at 1600 miles and I just did the rear diff fluid yesterday and another oil change.

Oil wasn't too dirty but the rear diff fluid definitely looked like a change didn't hurt. The magnetic plug picked up quite a big of gunk and I'm glad it's out the car now. As the fluid was draining you could see some metallic material coming out - just refilled with oem fluid and it was super easy. Better than paying $200 at the dealer when materials cost $30...

Did my SS diff at 1000 miles. Felt like it was good to get any break-in material out of the gear oil.

Just did my diff with OEM fluid, and M6 trans with redline DT4, had 13k on the car. you can certainly tell a difference in the trans, the the rear diff looked like it needed it.

I believe it states in the manual to change it at 1500 miles. That is why it is fitted with fill and drain ports unlike older GM rears to make it easier for regular service intervals. These 8.5 rears have less back lash compared to the older stuff.

I haven't run OEM fluid in my diff since the first change. 33,000 miles on the clock with 30 or more tack hours with zero groan or issues. Currently running AmsOil 75w90 gear oil with no additive and no groan whatsoever. To each their own.

There is a service bulletin with this concern, the procedure basically tells dealership technicians to flush the diff with new fluid, do figure 8s and keep flushing until the noise is no longer present. I would not use any other fluid than oem even if tracking the car, they have differential coolers for a reason. The noise is caused by the clutches not being broken in or too much material suspended in the fluid. I've done this procedure personally on my own and about 4 other friends cars here locally and have never had to do a second flush. There is an additive in it for the clutches so call me crazy but I dont know anyone with differential problems using oem fluid.
