Summer Tires In Cold Temps?
Wondering if the tire guru's can chime in?
Getting to the end of the season here in Michigan for driving the ZL1. Thinking about taking the car to cars and coffee one more time tomorrow morning. My car has Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. The car is sitting in a 40 degree temperature garage. Expected outside temperature tomorrow morning will be in the upper 20's then warming into the 40's in the afternoon with dry conditions. The drive home will probably be in the mid to upper 30's. Next week temps will be falling into the teens. So, it looks like the end of the driving season is here. Trying to squeeze one more drive in before winter hibernation. I won't be driving aggressively due to obvious limited cold weather traction of these tires. Do you think this would risk damaging the tires by taking the car out for a little drive? (see paragraph below from the Tire Rack website). Thanks, Tyrolblue67 "Note: Tires exposed to temperatures of 20 degrees F (-7 degrees C) or lower must be permitted to gradually return to temperatures of at least 40 degrees F (5 degrees C) for at least 24 hours before they are flexed in any manner, such as by adjusting inflation pressures, mounting them on wheels or using them to support, roll or drive a vehicle." |

Nah, I wouldn't risk it.

I posted an identical thread: https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=564158
FWIW I put my winter wheels on with factory LT all seasons last weekend, the season is over for summer tires in Michigan :( |

I wouldn't be bothered by this the "risk" is overstated:

The drive home may be more interesting depending on: 1) How cold it is and how long the car sits 2) The amount of tread left on the summer tires. I think you will be fine as long as you anticipate reduced grip for the first part of the return trip (until the tires warm a bit). |

Made the call to not take the ZL1 this morning.
It worked out because temps stayed in the lower 30's and snow flurries started around 10. There were others that took the risk and drove their summer cars. I ended up taking the beater. So, sad to say the winter hibernation has started. Thanks for the input. Tyrolblue67 |
