Top up or down mileage

I just took a 300 mile trip and noted a very big difference in MPG with each. The trip with the top down seem to have taken a lot more gas than the one with the top up. I would have thought it would be the other way around. I have about 1800 miles on the car when I left and around 2400 when I started the return trip. I used 93 octane in both trips. I had about 1/4 of a tank left on my top down trip and 1/3 with the top up. I was actually driving faster with the top up on average so the top down must make a very big difference. Is that expected? Will a windscreen save gas with the top down?

Good question. I haven't tracked mileage across both "modes" yet. I have done well on the highway in mixed top down and up driving achieving 27mpg on a 300 mile trip all on a car with less than 1k miles. If I take a trip of a hundred miles or so, I will track my mileage but I have to assume with the top down, there will be some additional drag resulting in a lowered MPG.

I have been monitoring the instant mileage and I do get about 2 MPH at 70 with the top up. About the same as drafting (about 3 Or 4 car length back) a truck or car at that speed.

Common sense that mileage would drop with drop top. Think of all the recesses for air to swirl into vs. how the air flows over the car with top up. No difference than the coupe guys running with windows down vs. up.

X2 on what blpadge2 said. Here's a portion of a screen capture from my Fuelly.com account. Prior to my last fill-up, I had been driving home from work just about every day with the top down. I don't do too much spirited driving, so most of the MPG decrease can be attributed to driving with the top down.

I am very impressed with the mpg of this beast. With mixed driving (and a heavy foot) I am averaging around 20-21 mpg. My wifes Infiniti EX35 isn't any better and has 2 less cylinders and 160 less hp.

All the money I spent on a Convertible over a coupe do you think I'm going to worry over a few cents more for gas mileage. If that was the case I'd bought a 4 cyl. Instead of the big V8.

Drag coefficient increases a significant amount with the top down which is why you noticed increased fuel consumption.

I'm averaging 27-28 with the top up, and 26 or so with the top down. that's without using cruise control.

Dont know about y'all but I can hear my NPP exhaust so much better with the top down that it encourages me to stomp the gas that much more often. Top up / Top down - either way Im getting about 13 MPG. Ohh I love the sounds of the exhaust in Track mode.....
