It's also no longer dexos2 certified and that has been mentioned in this thread a bunch of times. :(

Ah. I guess Valvoline didn't want to pay the licensing fee for such a small niche market.

According to what has apparently been provided by Valvoline, they claim that it can't be licensed any longer (implying that GM isn't allowing new products into the program). But, I suspect that you are much closer to reality in that they don't want to pay the fee to get the label with the new formula because it isn't selling strongly enough to warrant the label (and the cost).

When you say "any" 0W40 dexos2, you really mean any of the three Mobil 1 0E40 dexos2 oils, or maybe the Castrol Edge one that's pretty hard to find. There are no other dexos2 oils that are 0W40. :(

It's too bad that I can't get dexos2 5W40 oil easily and inexpensively - I would go that route if it were a very good "second choice." But, it seems that it's possibly MORE difficult to find locally, and there seems to be little to no cost savings over the 0W40 Mobil 1.

My Silverado oil change runs me about $65 at the dealership and hate paying it. Almost double that for a car that's drive half as often is even harder to stomach. Yes, I know... Don't complain about the operating and maintenance costs for a car I bought on purpose. First world problems.
Good point! It's been a while since i visited a Dexos2 page and indeed not much choice there. Used to be more incl Motul i believe.

Valvoline MST 5w40 used to be a good alternative, but it has been discontinued and is no longer Dexos2 certified as the receipe has changed.

Oh well, it is either Mobil 1 or Mobil 1 it seems
Since i track my car i will stick with the factory fill Formula 0w40.

Wish the 2018 owners manual didn't have conflicting information.

In one page it says get dexos1 5W-30, which is the page I found before buying $70 of M1 5W-30. On another page it says M1 0W-40 or 5W-40 dexos2.

Looking around for the right stuff and it seems pretty scarce..

Thanks for putting together this info.

Keep in mind, that unless you track your car 5w30 dexos1 gen2 is perfectly fine according to GM.

Yep. $22 for two 5qt jugs in store or about $5 to have it shipped (although I have read a number of comments about them being damaged in shipping).

Holy crap the Mobil1 ESP Formula 0w40 is expensive!!!
Going with Motul 8100 X Clean 5W40 Dexos2 instead as it is quite a bit less.

Where are you possibly sourcing the Motul and what sort of price are you seeing?

While I'm generally happy to just go the route of the Costco oil (dexos1), I'd like to know if there's something in the dexos2 family with a higher viscosity for possibly better protection that isn't 3-4x the price...

My prices are Canadian, so take a correction for that!
Mobil1 ESP Formula 0w40 Dexos2 from a dealer (best source) $17 per lire. Motul 8100 X Clean 5w40 Dexos2 20 litre jug averages $13 per litre via my mechanic's local supplier.

Percentages should be about the same, though. That's roughly 25% less which would mean it's still 3x the cost of the Costco oil.
