Back up video image

Ok... I searched the forum and couldn't find anything talking about this so here goes.

A little back ground; I was driving a 2007 Pontiac Solstice (car was built before screens and back up camera trend) My wife has a 2012 Equinox (it has a screen and back up camera). I tell you this so you understand where I'm coming from.

I now have a 2016 Camaro (and love it) my 16 yr old daughter ask "Dad, why doesn't mom's car have the little lines that show on the screen as you back up? Those are cool!"

So my question is, where in the automotive process did the little lines show up on the screens? Is this new to the 2016 Camaro, or did the previous generation have them?

Thanks in advance!

They are cool and helpful too !

My 2015 has them too, on some cars they can be turned on and off....I'm not sure if it was available that way on the Equinox or not though, I know the ‘12 Camaro's didn’t have a screen at all.

Thanks, I'm just trying to figure out how far back it appears on the Camaro. In 2012 the Equinox doesn't have them at all....on or off.... just a camera.

Another little fact is that from 2016 onward all new vehicles in the United States must be manufactured with backup cameras...so that is a standard feature now.

2018+ vehicles are required to have backup cameras.

Not all of the backup camera software is the same, and some have different features based on the year of the vehicle.

If you have it, it should be under something like this in Settings on your console... Config->Display->Rear Camera Options

2013 is when the Camaro got the screen for the radio.....but it does seem like I remember people in 2014 having the lines and folks with 13's wanting them.

Does anyone know if the lines represent the width of the tires or the fenders?

It's not necessarily the MY but when they're produced. Anything produced after May 1st 2018 must have a backup camera. The rule/law started a phase in process May of 2016.

My '14 had straight lines only, but the '16 has the lines that move when you turn the steering wheel.

2010s, 11s and 12s had the image incorporated into the rear view mirror, with the lines. 2013s were the first year for Mylink and the image was now on the Mylink screen but without lines. 2014 was the first year with the lines.

Thanks for all the response, let me clarify a little better.

When did the lines that turn with the car show up on the Camaro?

Thanks

I am almost positive the lines on my '15 move, I will confirm today and post back.

I can confirm the 15's do have the moving lines when you turn the wheel.
