Oil Filter Wrench

Now that my free oil changes are over and will change it myself>

I have always used the end cap wrench or band in first pic. But the dealer used the "vise grip" looking one that I have never used. It looks like it crushes the filter.

Which one are people using?

Either works fine. We use both in our shop. Your disposing the old filter so if crushes slightly who cares.

end cap wrench.

Only reason the dealer tech doesnt use them is because they would have to have like 10 in their box.

The only other type of filter wrench I recommend having is a strap wrench. With the ever increasing thin-ness of the filter metal, I have crushed more and more filters trying to twist them off with the cap wrench. Gotta break out the strap wrench and get it up high where you cant crush it.

Me too. A good strap wrench is a must for any tool box.

Screwdriver and drive it into the side!

Seriously though, I always end up buying some new type because the one I had didnt fit for some reason. I have like 5 different ones now of all types. The chain strap type works pretty well.

I use the top one that fits on an extension and a ratchet. Works everytime and so easy to use. Don’t know why you want to use the other one when the top one is so easy. Just my 2 cents

Funny you mention this, I’ve owned countless 60’s and 70’s cars and I’ve forgotten the number of times where the only solution to get the filter off (after being seized in for god knows how long) was the ‘screw driver through the side and a hammer’ method.

With that said I normally use the strap type filter wrench. Except when desperate.

They have rubber gaskets on them. Why is everyone needing tools for this? Am I missing something?

rage, they always get over-tightened or not prelubed and basically seize on there. Its a pretty common problem across cars and bikes!

Yep, the factory filter was on there pretty good!

Now I can get them off by hand, but that first one was tough.

+1...haha! All the years that I have been changing my own oil and filter, I never tighten the filter so tight that I need a wrench to break it free. Now the oil pan plug, that's a different story.
