dry filter or wet?

ok ive looked around cant really find anything.
I have a rotofab wet intake for my 192SS. would a dry filter be better for the drag strip? like make more power and run better ET's?

thanks

No discernible difference.

Some of the local HT guys were saying to stay away from oiled filters because there will be gunk junk down the intake from the filter; is this true?

Really only an issue when there is either too much oil on the filter, or the filter was not completely dry when the oil was added.

To much oil and mess with the MAF sensor, just don't dunk it like a turkey fryer.

Just use a stock paper filter. Filters better, always change to new (no cleaning and messing with oil, Etc.) and performance is usually just the same as a K&N, Etc..

Differences of 1-2 BHP to the most is negligible (to me).

this is the route I go now. Used N&N and some other oiled filters before. I just don't believe they do anything besides let more dirt into the engine.

Oiled picks up a bit more dirt, dry flows a bit better. That is the common explanation.

Indeed and wanted to add that for over 15 years I had a variety of oiled filters bolted on my engines. From K&N to Green, J&R - You name it.
Finally reached the conclusion that it is all Hype and a lot of BS and in the extreme cases, the oil residues even tend to "fry" the MAF heated element.

This makes sense, although the differences can't be too large. I tried both, there is no tangible difference in power or sound. Subjectively the new style RF dry filter (with the thin wire mesh) looks a bit better, too.

I am sorry, but if you think some "dirt" or dust that has to be measured in micron's which are close to the width of a human hair are going to cause issues for an engine then the great air filter debate isnt the only koolaide being passed around.

It has been proven many times over thru the years, the foam gauze style filters will flow more air the the OEM pleated paper ones. They only time this isnt true is for the Donaldson Powercore air filters like the C6 Z06 and ZR1 used, those filters are able to filter at OEM pleated paper levels while flowing more air than the aftermarket foam gauze filters.

If you are only looking at stock size versus foam gauze in stock size there wont be a huge change in the CFM the filter can flow. Where most aftermarket foam filters start to improve is when the filter size increases while proving a larger filtering area with less restriction and while flowing more CFM.

One of the big mods for Audi's is to keep the stock airbox as it is a ram air model from the factory and make some minor changes while adding a much larger filter to the sealed airbox. Those changes along with running a smooth solid 1 piece silicone intake tube show a verified gain of around 12hp to the wheels and a increase in 1psi of boost.

The over oiling issue of K&N filters was and is a issue due to as said it can kill the MAF element along with causing issues on the automatic transmissions. The MAF element goes thru a burn off cycle at every key off, it doesnt hurt to clean if with MAF cleaner periodically as well.

I prefer the dry filters as well now, they flow better and no messy oiling. Just wash them and go. Unless you live in the desert and drive thru sand storms all the time you wont ingest enough "dirt" to cause any issues to the engine. The 1000°+ cylinder combustion temps will burn off dust particulates that enter the combustion chamber.
