Can Californians purchase 2021 ZL1 out of state despite the temporary brake ban?
Hello guys,
Apologies if that question was already covered in a different thread, but is the California ban on brakes with high copper content enforced purely at the sale level (i.e. via California dealerships), or are they also preventing the registration of all related cars like the ZL1, even when purchased out of state? Thanks, Geoff |

Why don't you ask CA DMV? At least you will get the absolute correct information.

I believe it's purely at the sales level (dealership) for new cars.
If you buy out of state and bring back to CA you will need to get the car smogged and inspected prior to initial registration from my understanding. |

Thanks @beemer105.
Is the smog test required because Camaro ZL1's do not automatically have the 50-state-legal sticker? I come from the Corvette world (had 2 of them in the past, most recent one being a 2009 I purchased new in-state back then), and reading the Corvette forum since then it now appears all Corvettes nowadays are 50-state ready. But I could totally see that this may not be the case for all GM or Chevrolet cars. Best, Geoff |

I recently picked up a 2018 out of state and I was required to smog it before CA DMV would register the vehicle. They also required a visual inspection at the DMV where they mostly just looked for the '50 state smog legal' sticker under the hood.
I'm not sure if a brand new vehicle would require the same or if they have a grace period. Since were talking about comiefornia here, I have my doubts. |

The SMOG is really because the state doesnt trust any other state to confirm that it meets CA emission regulations even with the 50-state legal build.
Think about it like this. Car #1 is sold in CA at manufacturer dealer, emission equipment is invalid for the state. Manufacturer is liable. (large scale investigation can occur i.e. diesel emission scandal) Car #2 is same car make/model and build but shipped and sold outside CA. Emission equipment is invalid for CA when owner decides to bring it across state lines. Owner is now the responsible party not manufacturer. |

Ok, a little confused OP asking about the brake pads and it turned to smog certification. Maybe I am confused, is the brake inspection part of the smog certification in CA. It has been awhile since I resided in CA, but when I was there smog certification had to do with emission standards and not copper infused brake pads. But of course it is CA!!!!!!!!!

Prometheus, true I wasn't asking specifically about smog, although that was useful as well. I suppose it would be good to confirm that CA DMV wouldn't check the brakes, or rather look at a list of "banned" cars and say "nope, can't register this one!"

Yes indeed, I had read that it would not affect units already in stock. That might very well be your point, if one was to purchase a unit already in stock, the DMV wouldn't care whether it came from a CA dealership or an out-of-state one, so it looks like it would all be fine either way!
