SS w/ Mag Ride on track?
Hey guys,
I'm currently in a C7Z06 that I love to death. I unfortunately have to get out of it though because I'm joining the service and won't be able to afford it on my future salary in the short term. I'm looking at a 2017 SS with Mag ride, and I just wanted to know how track capable they are out of the box? I know the 1LE exists, but because this has to be my daily driver for the next 3 or so years I really want to stick with the A8. If they offered the 1LE with the A8 it wouldn't even be a question. I know they are very capable cars because I did the Corvette Owner's school at Spring Mountain and SS's were the chase cars and they did extremely well. Just wondering how many here are tracking their non-1LE SS with Mag Ride option and what I should know. There's still a small % chance I will get the 1LE but having none in my area is making it even less likely. Thanks in advance! |

Honestly I find the standard SS with MRC to be very competitive. There is little to no body roll and the suspension is very stiff in track. It's definitely not going to be a Z06 though.

I'm tracking my A8. This car is ready for the track out of the box. Just change brake fluid and pads and you are good to go.
I'm stuck in the same situation with my Camaro being my daily driver, otherwise I would have opted for the 1LE a long time ago (such a great value). My dream = 1LE with 10 speed auto

I've been tracking my 16 SS with MRC since last year.
Here's a video of me chasing GT350 in my SS. http://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=491639 I would say this car is very capable on track. When I ran with Alfa Romeo club, I ran in advanced group (all experienced drivers) and passed quite a few expensive cars, such as R8, Carrera 4S, Alfa 4C, M6, etc... Sure 1LE will be faster with same driver, but SS is still fun on track. As long as you are not expecting Z06 performance, I think you'll be satisfied with SS.

I'm not a fast driver, but I have an a8 MRC 2ss. I've done a few trackdays and I like the MRC. If you can deal with the M6 just get a 1LE and call it done. I've gotten a track alignment and better tires and it feels like a much better car.
The video below isn't me and I don't know who it is, but it should give you an idea about camaros, it sounds like an A8 to me, I'm not sure if this guy has MRC or not but he was running around 2 minute laps at buttonwillow in a totally stock car last time I was there. Thats much faster than me in my stock 2ss. Maybe one day. For a DD the MRC makes alot of sense, smooth when you commute, firm for track. You could always upgrade to 1LE suspension later and have 85% of a 1LE. (Only works on 2017 and newer) http://www.thatgmpartsguy.com/suspen...or-ss-84233245 Last edited by NCSD; 04-20-2017 at 10:31 PM. |

Get the manual for the track, way more fun (opinion). It rev matches for those that dont want to heal and toe (once you learn how though theres nothing better). Otherwise the car is very capable, balanced, and extremely easy to drive at the limit. Ive honestly considered getting rid of it because its too easy to drive fast, and I like cars that are a handful. Follow the guidance in the manual about oil (motor and diff) and brake fluid, and upgrade your pads!

That's me in the video and can confirm my car does have MagRide and is an A8. Car was 100% stock at that time down to fluid, pads, PSI, and runflats. |

Thanks for the info guys. I'm definitely not expecting Z06 performance (that car is a monster on the track) but still looking for something capable that I can drive to the track, drive it hard safely on track and then drive it back home.
I did test drive an SS without mag ride last weekend and it felt very loose. I wish they would've let me test drive one with mag ride, but I'm assuming it feels very similar to my Z06. I know I can also upgrade the SS with some 1LE parts, even though they seem pretty expensive. The 6 piston brake kit and 1LE suspension are definitely on my radar but I hate spending money on things that I know down the road won't increase the value of the car and essentially just become money down the tube. I did already buy the OEM darkened tail lamps and black bowties so an SS is definitely my choice, I'm just still torn on 1LE vs SS. The thing I'm struggling with most is that after this summer I really won't be near (or have time to go to) a track so I'm not sure if sacrificing the A8 and other options of the SS for the 1LE is worth it in the long term. But in the short term I plan on going to the track at least once a month until I leave. Does the SS come with Performance Traction Management? Or is that reserved for the 1LE/ZL1? Also, the SS doesn't get the eLSD correct? |

If you don't have too much stop and go traffic in your area go with the 1LE. It's a shame spending ~1200$ for suspension (not including installation) , $2500 for bigger brakes , $3000 for better wheels and tires
