Exclamation What can CAUSE a fuel injector to go bad?

I just had a injector replaced.

What would CAUSE a injector to go bad?

I asked the service advisor, but was basically told that “it just happens from time to time”.

It's a very high pressure (2000+ PSI) electric solenoid driven valve with crazy tight tolerances to handle the cylinder compression and fuel pressures. So if the coil, internal connections, inlet screen or spring fails or the outlets plug up or foul ... it fails.

My 1985 Corvette I restored a couple of years ago had one injector go bad. At first when the car ran crappy like it was misfiring I had such trouble diagnosing it. I thought it was plugs, wires, fuel, etc. It was intermittent too making it so hard to trouble shoot. I changed plugs twice, wires, cap, rotor, still did it. I had to give up and bring it to a shop where they diagnosed it as one bad fuel injector. But it took them a while too- they had to do compression checks, etc. It was probably age of the car at that point but rather than replace just one, I replaced them all. Car ran so great after. Was an $800 job though.

Sometimes bad batches are made from the manufacturer or they just go bad on their own! Number of reasons as a Auto Tech told me and sometimes not explainable. At least you had it replaced under warranty like my 2016 SS had one fail that was fixed under warranty too!

My 2016 GMC Sierra with the same 6.2 as the Camaro had one go bad at 25k miles. As said they are just random and unexplained.

Solenoids stick all the time. As someone said above, these things are made with tight tolerances, so it only takes a small distortion to make it "sticky." If the unit has been in service for a while and performing fine, I would go with heat as the cause of the failure. If it fails in the short term, it probably wasn't made right. Given the billions of these things out there performing well, they are incredibly reliable.
