Agreed. Had a g37 with 330hp. Then I had a 16 s550 coyote. Had 450 at the motor. I then got a procharged SS with 603hp at the wheels.

Each car was sufficient in speed till I upgraded. The HP isn’t needed but each one was WAY more fun to drive.

You’d think that but no… it is not. I thought the same at around 450HP in my last car. Fastest thing I ever owned and surely fast enough.

Then I got a procharged SS. Now riding in friends 1LE feels like riding in a 350z.

Why on earth would you want to get to over 70 (2nd gear) or 100mph (3rd gear) even faster, with even less time to enjoy sounds and acceleration before you have to back out of it?
I felt the same way for so, so long. I largely do but the irony is, I have a car that makes over four digits now and I drive it casually 99% of the time. I very rarely ever give it more than a bit of throttle but, when I do, it's an absolute thrill and I think that's where the pleasure comes in at. Knowing that I can go from 60-130 faster than most folks can do 0-60 in and slow down to normal speeds before anyone really realized what happened, has been a fun experience so far.

If I had to guess, I would think that is where most people tend to use power like that. In very quick bursts and then coming back down to regular speeds (when not on the track or drag strip, of course). Now, is that even remotely responsible or mature? Absolutely not. But if we were all responsible and mature to the point of being stale, we'd all be driving a Prius.

If the roads are empty you can enjoy the 650 hp in the middle of no where. I used to think a car that ran low 12’s like ours do would be perfect for the street and I wouldn’t want more. And quite honestly it probably is. That being said most people get used to the horsepower and will want more. It’s not even about seeing the speed hit 120+, it’s more about the shove into the seat when you step into it. If you think going 100+ in a straight line on an empty road is dangerous but you don’t think 10 over the speed limit on a twisty road with blind corners isn’t, then you’re kidding yourself (not saying you do but others who say they enjoy their cars capable handling on public roads sometimes say this).

The shove in the seat is why I am saving up for either a Zl1 or c6 Z06 as I got used to the LT1 shove.

I agree. I understand and get that the experience you get when accelerating with 650 hp vs. 460 hp is different in terms of how it feels. My nephew has a 750 hp tuned GT-R, which I've driven. It's a blast, but being AWD it accelerates so fast that you can really only use the power safely, much less legally, in short bursts on the street. And of course the car cost twice what my 1LE did.

To me a car that is fun to drive is more about balance. Horsepower is important, but so is handling, feel and braking. Someone above mentioned a 350Z. I've owned mine for 20 years, but yet it still brings a smile to my face every time I drive it. It is set up for autocrossing and even though it's by no means a new car or as fast as my Camaro it is one of the best handling cars I've ever owned, thanks to many suspension and braking mods.

I have a friend who has owned almost 80 sports cars in his lifetime, including multiple 911s and Corvettes, including most recently a 911 Turbo. He likes to say I'd rather have a lesser horsepower car that I can drive at 6 or 7 tenths, than a high horsepower car that I can only drive at 4 or 5 tenths on the street. You get to utilize more of the potential of the car that way.

This is probably why the GR86/FRS is so popular

No doubt. Plus those cars are relatively inexpensive in comparison with other sports/performance cars so they are attainable by more people.

Thanks for the thoughtful explanation. I can see the appeal as you are describing it, but also know that my brain is wired differently. I'm more in the "use most of the capability of the car most of the time" mindset. Admitedly, you can't really do this on the street with an SS 1LE (corning limits so high, too many people around on the majority of roads), so I resolve to get my fun on a occasional back road or (as frequently as I can) on a road course track. But of course that doesn't meet my "most of the time" ethos. The rest of the time it's just enjoying the engine sounds and the brief WOT.

I had an ND2 miata, I know what this is. It was just too small for me. There is a fine middle ground, maybe the 86 is closer to the low end of that. Honestly if I could own two cars for the rest of time it would be the nd2 and the ss.

I second that! Though mine would have to be a custom miata with more leg room. Will they ever make one in Tall size?
