V6- A8 to M/T
Anyone have experience going from the A8 to a manual? If my A8 transmission problem is not resolved I am going to get rid of the car. I am considering trading it for one with M/T- perhaps even a convertible. I have not heard of any problems with the manual transmission cars- are there any issues? How do the two cars compare- does the manual have more pep and will it get the same MPG as my A8? My A8 is loafing most of between 1500 and 2500 RPM and I get really good MPG- 30 to 33 MPG. Is there a sweet spot for the V6 when shifting manually? I use the car for commuting and I want to keep the V6, no SS or turbo 4 as they need premium fuel. I would not even consider staying with GM due to the tranny issue but I really do love the Gen 6 Camaros- and love everything about mine- except for the darn bad A8 tranny.

Manual transmissions are typically more reliable. As long as you know how to properly use a clutch it'll be trouble free for the life of the car. That's been my experience.

The only problem I have had is shift rattle and there is a fix for it but it really doesn't bother me.

I have owned mostly manuals in my life time- and know how to drive and shift them- for both performance and economy. My RS and my C4 Vette are the only automatics I ever had in a car- and I have had a LOT of cars. I almost didn't buy my RS as it was an automatic. I went back and forth, finally decided to pull the trigger......I should have stuck with my instincts and love for manuals!

Funny you say no SS due to premium, it literally is a difference of less than $5 per tank of gas.

Correct me if I'm wrong, or if this just in the SS but the gearing in a M6 is higher than in the A8 so it should accelerate much quicker. Drove a friends A8 and compared to my M6 it did feel like my car accelerated quicker.

The cost in SW Fl is about .60-.80 more for premium. Even 89 octane is .30 more than regular. And I would presume the SS would get 20 MPG versus over 30 I get in the RS. But the other main reason is the availability of premium- when a hurricane is coming or even after it passes it's hard to get premium gas down here- sometimes for weeks. Only 87 octane is available.

If you don't whomp on the gas pedal all the time you could get between 26 and 29 mpgs on an Gen 6 SS, that's what I average on my daily commute. I have the SS/A8 but I'm sure I'd be able to duplicate the same mpg's with SS/M6. And on any long all-highway trip an SS can easily get upwards of 30 mpg's.

I can also average 6 if I try. It's all about how far into the intake you stick your foot. running 87 in an SS is ok as long as you don't goose on it all the time. The computer will adjust for it, but for safety sake I wouldn't be punching it from redlight to redlight |

Many SS owners on this forum get over 30 MPG on the highway and average 22-24 overall.
Heck the old LS1 equipped 4th gen F-Bodies with the old 4 speed auto could hit 30 MPG on the highway 20 years ago |

My Gen 5 SS M/T that I traded in for my Gen 6 RS I got only 19- driving with an extremely light foot. I barely broke the 20 MPG barrier on the highway going a steady 70 MPH. The other factor I did not mention is that insurance is much higher on the SS than my RS. I need to keep my bills as low as possible as I approach retirement. And I will have another car- probably a Vette convertible for my power, sound and fun on the weekends. (They are low to insure- even lower than my RS).

Anyway, those who are stating the SS is getting 30 MPG or as much as the V6 are way over exaggerating it.. Yes..there ARE some SS's getting that much... but don't go and buy an LT1 expecting to get 30 MPG out of it... the NORM is between 15 / 16 MPG on the street and 25 / 27 on the freeway. My absolute best in my SS is 28 and that was with the cruise control set to 75 MPH on absolute flat terrain on I-10 in Texas with nobody else in the car except me. Otherwise my freeway runs were typically around 23 MPG and street runs were typically 16 - 18 MPG. The SS is not an economy car, do not buy one if you're worried about fuel mileage. I don't care about the fuel mileage, I wanted the SS because its a badass car. My 3.6 V6 (before I got the SS) Did 30 MPG ... ... On the STREET. Freeway mileage was between 35 and up to 47 (flat interstate / cruise control) That stated, there's a BIG difference in costs to fuel the two cars... they are no way equals in terms of efficiency...or anything close. The SS is designed to throw you in the back seat with a big grin on your face The V6 is designed to give you an occasional surprising moment for a quick smile, while keeping everything in check as far as practicality is concerned. I went from a gen5 M6 that I had for 7 years to a gen6 M6 1SS which I kept for one year then swapped out for a 2SS A8. Personally feel the A8 is noticeably faster also without the throttle lag I could not tune out in the M6.
