TPMS Shows Wrong Sensor on Dashboard

Not a big issue but my rear TPMS are the wrong way around (i.e. rear-left side actual tire pressure shows as rear-right side in the dashboard and vice-versa).

Presumably all the TPMS sensors are the same when purchased and then coded to the particular wheel? Just want to know if this is an issue with the individual TPMS sensor setup (I've just replaced all 4 tires for the winter) or was the car incorrectly coded at the factory?

cheers,
Pete.

Yes, TPMS sensors are location (wheel) specific, and unfortunately the software in the car is made to only store 4 sensors' worth of data.

You can go to a dealership to get these relearned (reprogrammed); alternatively, you can buy a $10 TPMS reprogramming tool from amazon, that's what I use whenever I swap wheels. The process itself is described in your owner's manual, my 2018 has it under section "TPMS Sensor Matching Process".

I have the same exact tool that arpad_m provided the link to and it works great. Cheaper than taking to the dealer or tire shop. I do my own tire rotation as I ensure the lugs are tightened and torqued correctly.

There are various write-ups on the forum. Here's a link to one: https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=594413

Makes sense thanks all. My sensors are all working correctly - just the rear tires are swapped on the display but sounds like I could use this in future and it's one of those tiny things that'll probably bug me (!) so for $10 small price to pay...

cheers,
Pete.

If you just replaced all 4 tires, move the wheel/tire to there correct location on the car
as per the sensor. I rotate all the time and my fronts read rear on the dash and rears read fronts on the dash. No biggie.

Sorry to necro this thread, but i did a search because i think i'm having the same issue. But it was one of those situations where you think "that cant be it...or could it be?".

Right rear tire is obviously flat when i look at it. Checked the right front with a tire pressure gauge and it was ok. I thought that maybe it was something more elaborate like the right rear receiver was not working and right front receiver was glitching. But then i thought it was probably just that the TP sensors were location specific and last time i got an oil change they rotated my tires front to back.

So does it sound like i just need to get them reprogrammed like you guys talk about? let me know what you all think. I just wanted to be 100% sure before i buy the reprogrammer, new sensors, 4 new tires when i only need one or a brand new car or something.

Right, you just need to get that programmer they linked and use it. It takes about 1 minute. Since I swap different sets of wheels/tires on and off my car for various uses, I use it all the time. You will wonder why the car doesn't come with one of these!

It's in the Owner's Manual, but the procedure for resetting the TPMS sensors is:
  1. Set the parking brake.
  2. Place the vehicle in Service Mode > hold starter button for over 5 seconds.
  3. Make sure the Tire Pressure info display option is turned on.
  4. Press and hold SEL in the center of the five-way DIC control. The horn sounds twice to signal the receiver is in relearn mode and the TIRE LEARNING ACTIVE message displays on the DIC screen.
  5. Place the relearn tool against each tire sidewall, near the valve stem. Then press the button to activate the TPMS sensor. A horn chirp confirms that the sensor identification code has been matched to this tire and wheel position.
  6. Proceed in the following order:
  1. Driver Side Front
  2. Passenger Side Front
  3. Passenger Side Rear
  4. Driver Side Rear

TYVM for the instructions, will buy the tool and follow your steps to get it to relearn. =)

Adding on that it's an inexpensive tool and easy to do. Pro tip when I learned to use mine was place the tool antenna against the sidewall at the valve stem, not the wheel itself or close to the wheel. Car will honk the horn as to place the tool and it learns, takes all of less than a minute.

There's also a pinned thread for this in the DIY forum - maybe it should be pinned here under Wheels and Tires as well?

Yup, that's the "canonical" thread for TPMS reprogramming. The only thing I'd add to it is that (as Matt alluded to above) service mode can be used as well, the car does not need to be running for this procedure. Not sure about accessory mode, because I always use service mode.

I won't take much credit for the steps: I just lifted the text straight from the Owner's Manual, abbreviated it and added one small extra explanation. I printed this out on one page and keep it in my glove box along with the relearn tool as a handy reference. In particular, it makes it easy to remember which order to go in.

BTW, sooner or later you'll forget Step 1 (set the parking brake). The relearn won't work and you'll start driving yourself crazy trying to figure what is broken. Ask me how I know...

I set the parking brake almost religiously no matter what, because I don't want to end up with the car sitting on the parking pawl (lots of hills and inclines over here, so parking on a grade is an everyday occurrence).

Foot on brake, engage parking brake, foot off brake, switch to park, kill engine is what I do every time, just to make sure I don't forget. Yeah, this is an automatic and the A8 at that, I know, no reminder needed

(Color me obsessive, but I also drilled that routine into my wife and daughter. The shifter on the 4500-pound family SUV was often super difficult to get out of park when wifey forgot to do the above, and I began to seriously worry about that tiny pawl breaking.)
