Currently own 15' Z/28 - Looking at Zl1 1le

Hi all,

I am in absolute love with the Camaro platform and was finally able to acquire a low mile (to me!), original owner Z/28 earlier this year. I was hunting for a 4 seater after countless Corvettes, and most recently a comp package M4. I feel like the Camaro perfectly fits my needs being American, V8, stick, fastish and 4 seats for family fun.

That being said, I am now starting to pay a lot of attention to the 6th gen zl1 1le. It seems like its my car, but slightly improved on with gobs more power and looks to kill. My last c6z06 drove in track trim on the street so I don't mind the big wing, etc. Although I haven't tracked my Z/28 yet (thanks COVID), I planned on it and would absolutely do the same with any new addition.

Has anyone here made the transition? I know I will miss the NA 427 and the look of the carbon ceramics along with no brake dust, but is it worth it?

Prices on the Z's are very strong so I can get out of mine with some upside after I've gone through the car and made it perfect.

Interested to hear some thoughts on those who have either considered this move or have done it!

Thanks in advance!!

-Bo

I came from a Gen5 Camaro with 500Hp and Also have owned a few Z06's and a Grand Sport. The ZLE will not disappoint you at all, you can't compare the C6 platform to the ZLE. You would have to compare the C7 Z06 for a fair comparison. Only downfall to the Gen6 ZLE is the backseat is pretty small compared to the Gen5, my guess is about 3 to 4 inches smaller but for a car with a backseat its perfect. I was also needing a backseat and it works just fine for me. You won't miss your Z06 with the ZLE.

I just ditched my standard ZL1 to go back into a Z/28 (I had traded my last Z/28 in on it and regretted it within hours). Don't give up the Z/28!! Many of the owners who have both that I've spoken with still prefer the Z/28. You have a rare car now, the ZLE and ZL1 in general is a dime a dozen. They are faster though, and the A10 is a BEAUTIFUL transmission, but as a whole, its just not the same.

Nothing like that 427 N/A power! I would want to go heads/cam/headers on that just because. Either car is fantastic on track. Unless you're really seasoned, you'll have plenty of room to grow with that Z/28.

Sixth gen alpha chassis makes the 5th gen feel like a dinosaur on track, experienced racers all agree on that point

Unfortunately I live in CA and are smog requirements are ridiculous. I used to have the energy to swap parts every two years but that ship has sailed. I just want something amazing out of the box with maybe a cat-back or shifter left to do. That is where the Z/28 came in as there really isn’t much I need, or even *could* improve on. I’ve been really impressed and even more so now that it’s on proper tires (3R’s).

That’s pretty surprising to hear actually. You’ve sparked my interest... Can you elaborate?

Although I never owned a 5th gen Z28, had a modded 2010 LS3/6 speed, I would say to keep your Z28! That LS7 427 is awesome to me and doesn’t compare to a LT4 s/c engine. The 6th gen ZLE is an awesome Track Camaro as is the Z28 but if I had a Z28 I would hang on to it and enjoy that big 7.0 liter 427!

No! The Z/28 is a fortune and is already a collector's item. That car will accumulate more value over time than any ZLE.

Are you looking at a zle for track work or just street driving / fun use? I swapped from a z/28 to a ZLE and am very happy I made the change but I'm heavily track focused. The z/28 has a theater and a presence that just cant be replicated by the zle however the zle is a much better car; interior, handling, creature comforts etc.

If street driving; keep the z/28 (it's fairly softer then the zle as well); if track day driving then you'll find lots of rewards in your change but should still weigh the economic impacts.

Here's a review I wrote about the two cars in a track setting. Might be helpful:

You just need to go drive a ZL1 1LE. I bought a 15 Mustang GT PP instead of the 15 Camaro SS 1LE. Just didn’t love it and didn’t like the interior. I had a 14 GT before that. Did my first 2 HPDE’s in those Mustangs. About 2 years later I drove a 2017 Camaro SS 6m non 1LE and I was done. Love the Alpha chassis like no car I’ve owned or driven since 1990.

2) Buy ZLE

4) Profit.

ZLE > Z/28 every day!

The Z/28 is a great ride, but the Gen 6 chassis is lightyears ahead.

Good luck with your decision.

Best regards,
Dave
