Dash Cam recommendation

Hi, I’m looking to get a dash cam. I just don’t know where to start. Any good brands I should consider . Can I install it myself? Where is a good place to mount them. Should I get a rear dash cam as well? Thanks in advance.

yep I‘m looking for a solution which could be mounted to the mirror. I think lethal garage did something like this.

From the limited reading and research I've done, I've found that the Thinkware F770 & F800 and Blackvue DR750S & DR900S dashcams are some of the best. You can find some information in the Audio, Video, Bluetooth, Nav, Radar, Electronics section of the forum.

I believe the company that makes the V1 mirror mounts also makes a blackvue mirror mount.
I have a blackvue but it's one of the pricier cams.
You could check Amazon and look for something cheaper with good reviews.

I use an Anker C1 Pro. Bought it on sale from Amazon for $75, includes a 32gb sd card.

I just ordered a refurbished BlackVue DR490L-2CH. One thing you should know about blackvue is that if you want to upgrade the SD card you must use very specific ones or they will overheat and fail. If you want a 2 camera system you need to figure out if you want the 2nd camera to record inside or if you want it to record out the back window. I am going to record out the back which is why I picked what I did as it has a 1080p rear camera. Most 2 camera systems dont have a good enough 2nd camera.

It depends how much you want to spend. I personally haven't shopped expensive dashcams because I don't find it reasonable for myself to spend $150+ on a camera right now (if you drive a ton then you may want to invest more). I watch a lot of car crash videos and would research a dashcam if I liked the video quality I saw. So I went with an Aukey DR01 which I got for $45 used on Amazon, although they're $75 new and I'm not seeing them on Amazon any more. I like it because it is very clear for the price and it is able to be plugged into one of the USB outlets in the console. This is the only video I have on YouTube from it right now: https://youtu.be/oH-tkhvDbb4

One thing I can say is do not order something that is "Full HD 1080p" from Alibaba or some other Chinese site. Anything below about $70 (new) is not true HD, from what I have seen.

I prefer to have a rear dashcam, and for awhile only drove around with that because 40% of crashes in the US are rear end collisions alone and I trust my own driving to avoid most things that may happen in front of me. I have a really cheap Chinese "Full HD" camera back there which is extremely annoying because it records AVI files which are like 240p. It also takes up the 12V plug right next to you in the center console which is rather hideous imo. I want to get a different one but I can't decide if it's worth it because if I was rear ended it would be obvious enough that you could see it, even with the terrible quality. Anyway, since you're just looking into it, I recommend getting something at least equivalent to the front camera and putting it in the rear.

Hope some of that was helpful

I agree. Thinkware and Blackvue are about as good as they come. I have a Thinkware F750 front and rear. The F750 has been replaced by the F770 and F800.

My rear camera installation is sorta unique, since I have a convertible.

Would having window tint be a problem with a rearview dashcam? Such as suction cup mess up tint or not being able to get a good picture?

Another vote for the Aukey, I have the DR02D (dual cam) in the wife's SUV and a set for my Camaro to be installed soon. The dual cams + the GPS module + the installation kit for constant power + a 64Gig SD card was ~ $225.

The picture quality is excellent. The only issue I ran into was shut down due to excessive heat from the sun. I have since put a clear heat shield on the wind shield with ~ 45% heat rejection that seens to have taken care of the overheating issue. FYI, I live in Phoenix and it gets HOT here in the summer, already having 100+ degree days.

***Just checked and can't seem to find them on Amazon even tho that's where I got em. Comes up with a brand called Rexing, maybe bought out??

I have the Blackvue DR750S, and it's indeed a great dual cam. Its night vision mode is very helpful. Not extremely impressed with the picture quality, though, it's pretty good but I expected sharper, there's lots of digital smoothing going on, presumably to achieve bit rate the system can then sustain at 60fps. I can't read license plates on the footage from more than ~20-25 feet, for example, unless lighting conditions are ideal.

I'd be interested in seeing your rear camera installation, as I have a vert also.

It's mounted between the rear seats and aimed so that it looks just above the spoiler. You won't be able to read license plates (Michigan doesn't have front plates anyway), but if somebody screws with your car while it's parked, or if you are hit from behind by someone approaching too fast or not braking, you'll pick it up.
