The cats get really hot really fast and will burn anything that gets on them. Typically what ruins a cat is overly rich fuel mixtures, where the unburned fuel reacts in the cat and overheats it.

OTOH, zinc will hurt the cats. If you want to run 15w50 for just track events, that's okay, but GM warns you not to run it for daily use.
Agreed on Zinc not being good for cats, and that 40 weight is a 40 weight.

BUT...

If you take a close look at the front and back of the M1 ESP 0W-40, it states this:

"Emission System Protection"

"Helps prolong the life and efficiency of car emission reduction systems"

So to me it seems like less about keeping the engine clean, and more about keeping the cats happy. But I agree, cleaner valves also mean less carbon going through the exhaust system.

No, you're too focused on the exhaust. The cats aren't the only emission system parts on the car, not by a long shot. Modern engines - especially the ones with direct injection - have issues such as carbon buildup on the intake valves due to oil vapor in the intake (PCV system and no wet gasoline to wash the vapor deposits off the valves). Dexos 2 is less likely to cause that kind of buildup, and the same goes for carbon in the chambers and on the compressor fins of a turbo. IOW, when the oil does burn, it burns cleaner and with less emissions of its own. And it reduces sludge buildup in colder parts of the engine. It's all emissions related. Also, DI engines have more problems with washdown of the cylinder walls and gasoline getting into the oil. So Dexos 2 oil also has to meet the most stringent anti-wear standards ever placed on motor oils.

Ive ordered 1 case from Amazon, and another one just now. 61$ for a case shipped, 55$ pre tax, same then and for this case. On amazon card I get back 5%. Had 21$ credit, so 30$ 0/40 dexos 2 ESP Mobil 1 syn. Im in LA. No one inventories it in any brick and mortar that i could find.

Jegs is running a deal 6 quarts for $45.99 plus shipping. There are some additional discounts if you spend enough that might apply too.

I just order it from speedway motors I believe it is. May not be the cheapest but I only change oil once a year and it comes with the AC Delco filter… In the spring when I take it out, prob put on avg 1500mi/yr and put it back in storage after Halloween.

Does anyone know what Part # can this oil be found under at a GM dealer?

Also, what is a good filer to use for this? Also what part # if it is going to be a GM oil filter?

I won't be going to the dealer for an oil change anymore, but I'd like to buy a good filter before I take it to my mechanic. The car is a daily driver even in the winter and I track it once in a while during the summer. Thanks

Don't buy the oil from GM, you will over pay, check out RockAuto.com for the oil, the GM filter is a PF64...

Which Mobil1 are you talking about? They don't make the Mobil1 0W-40 ESP Formula in 5qt jugs and a case (6qt) of the same for $29.95 is by far the cheapest I've ever heard of..

I've never seen the esp for $5 per qt.
If I do I will horde at that price.

Been buying at Oreilly's online $7.12 qt with code & free shipping.

I don't think they are buying the 0w40 dexos2.

At least in Canada, the cheapest source of Mobil1 ESP 0W-40 is Rock Auto, even with shipping.

If you have a local Mobil1 dealer/supplier, try talking to them. I talked to the local one and they end up being a bit more expensive than Rock Auto, and their order quantity isn't as flexible(either by cases of 6 or drums), but it doesn't hurt to ask.
