Factory fill oil?

Read through a bunch of first oil change threads and cant find an answer. Does the factory fill our engines with straight dino, synthetic blend or full synthetic when new?

Dexos1 for I4 and V6, Dexos2 for V8.

An example of Dexos2 is Mobil1.

Newer V8s 2019+ should be coming with the new M1 Dexos2 oil, older ones came with Dexos1 spec oil.

Dexos1 is not necessarily a synthetic blend. Mobil 1 5W-30 Full Synthetic has the green dexos1 label on the container:

This is from the 2018 Camaro Owners manual:

Recommended Fluids, Lubricants, and Parts:

Engine oil meeting the dexos1 specification of the proper SAE viscosity grade. ACDelco dexos1 full synthetic is recommended.

Viscosity Grade: Use SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade engine oil.

I wonder why the change.

My 2010 Gen5 came with Mobil1 and has a Mobil1 logo on the oil fill cap. Mobil1 is rated dexos2. In later years (not sure when), GM downgraded the Camaro V8 to dexos1. This seemed odd to me.

Now they are back to dexos2. What did they learn?

My owners manual on my 17 says blend.

Blend has been dropped by GM and is no longer produced by them, and replaced with the full synthetic spec.

Any Dexos1 spec oil for 2018 (all engines) and 2019-prior T4 and V6.

2019 V8 are Dexos2 spec oils.

Matt, can you quote what it says in your manual? Not doubting you. I see several cases of contradicting information in my 2018 manuals, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if the 2017 manual actually recommended the blend.

But just to clarify one thing - dexos1 does not specify full synthetic or blend. You can find the green dexos1 symbol on both synthetic blend and full synthetic oils. The dexos1 designation is the requirement. It could be the blend or full synthetic (for 2018). The 2018 manual does not say full synthetic is required. It says it is recommended on page 339 of the 2018 owner's manual. @Bongos2U posted the exact text above.

This blend would actually meet the requirement, but not the recommendation for 2018:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Pennzoil-...iner/155248421

Back the OP's question, who knows what the factory fill is? My Blackstone Labs analysis report after changing the factory fill said the viscosity was in the 5W-20 range, but no mention of synthetic versus blend.

Mobil 1 is not always dexos1. I was just in the oil aisle at Walmart the other night, and the blue dexos2 label was few and far between. All the Mobil 1 oil either had the green dexos1 label, or no dexos label at all. Valvoline 5W-40 MST full synthetic had the blue dexos2 label - this is one of the oils specified for Track usage in the 2018 owner's manual. The other dexos2 oil specified in the 2018 manual for Track usage is Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 (hard to find in the U.S.). The Track recommendation (requirement?) is different than the daily driver recommendation/requirement.

But, as others have pointed out, each year seems to be different, even though the cars use the same engine. Very odd and confusing.

Sure thing. Here is the fluids for the 2017’s from my Chevy app owners manual.

I looked again, and you're right: regular Mobil1 has a dexos1 rating.

That's unreal! Factory fill may well have been synthetic blend in 2017...

So what do you use in your 2017 LT1?
