2016 Camaro is all about the Aero (May 11 Update)

2016 Camaro is all about the Aero
Total aerodynamic lift improved by 30 percent for improved stability

DETROIT – After 350 hours of wind tunnel testing – often 24 hours a day – the new Camaro will slip more easily through the wind, and drivers of the Camaro SS will experience a marked improvement in reduced aerodynamic lift.

These changes illustrate the lengths the aerodynamics team went to for improved performance, stability, cooling and lower wind noise intrusion

“The importance of aerodynamics increases exponentially as we increase vehicle performance,” said Kirk Bennion, Exterior Design manager. “As engine output increases, we need more engine cooling. As acceleration and top speeds climb, we need to reduce lift for better high-speed stability. However, we cannot make any changes at the expense of increasing drag, which can hurt fuel economy.

“To balance these different aerodynamic targets, we tested literally hundreds of changes on the new Camaro, millimeters at a time.”

For example, the initial design called for the lower grille bars to be set at a 20-degree angle to the horizon. However, after meticulous testing, the team improved engine-cooling airflow by 1 percent by shifting the angle to 13 degrees – a change that achieved the airflow target while maintaining the original grille design.

And rather than a traditional front air dam to reduce aerodynamic lift, the team developed a flush belly pan that stretches from the front grille to the center of the vehicle. Paired with small “spats” forward of the front tires, the smooth underbody helps reduce total lift by 30 percent – while also reducing aerodynamic drag.

Chevrolet will introduce the all-new, 2016 Camaro on Saturday, May 16, during a special public event at Detroit’s Belle Isle Park.

There are a few lines that we hadn't visualized yet.

- There is a line that runs from the base of the A-pillar, over the top of the side glass, and then back along the top/outside of the C-pillar down to the trunk lid.

- The character line that's been rendered on this site as the fender line is not the fender line. It sits just under, runs under the side glass, and wraps up & around the quarter window. Plus, it's much sharper and more defined than what has been posted here before

- You can see the trunk shut line.

I got the bow tie right.

Yeah. I kinda suspected the profile shot to be the same one that was sent to the reveal invitees.

The front shot doesn't really tell us anything.

Well I'll finally post after years of coming and going from this site. I made an account a few weeks ago to say I can't believe you and others think they're going to cram another gold bowtie on the front of this car. Guess it's happening again.

Ever since the first camo pictures I thought it looked more verticle and it was the Camaro emblem was coming back. The "M" in the headlight raised the percentage. Then they actually show the new emblem and I thought yeah it's happening. One of the biggest things I was hoping for is the Camaro emblem on the front. Unless they just slapped that bowtie on there for the picture I think that's a bad call. That gold bowtie is an eyesore. Leave it on the family cars.

I'm with you there. Since the 5th gen, there's been no blue oval visible on the mustang.

I'm not sure the new Camaro "logo" is suitable for front grill placement, though, like the new Dodge slant stripes. Think of the Buick, Cadillac, and corvette mark. They were designed as true badges. I don't think the new Camaro one was. I may be wrong, and often am.

I agree with you. It seems as though the new emblem is more of a marketing "logo" than a badge. But I do think we will see it on the steering wheel at least.

Everyone looks at things differently, I think that new emblem is terrible to 1980's boy racer. I would rather have the bowtie. But the blue bowtie was better than the Gold one.

These pictures really didn't show anything at all. We've already seen the side profile picture, and the front one only shows that the front end will feature a chevy logo.

That being said, I am pleased that GM is putting a lot of attention and effort into improving the aero of this car. It will help the car perform better and get better fuel economy at the same time.

5th gen refresh. Disappointing.
All the improvements are great, but their lack of cojones to actually step forward with a fresh design is just flat disappointing.
