What's an LT1 short block worth?

Hey all,

debating on going with a bigger bottom end, 416 or 427 etc...

I'd sell my stock LT1 shortblock to cover some of the cost, but curious what it'd be worth.

Would be a shortblock with no accessories, but I'd be willing to include the stock camshaft (as I'd have no need for it) - has 9k

What's the going rate on these things?

I see that you’ve commented on the member classified forged LT1 shortblock threat. He’s had it listed for quite some time now for $4400 and it hasn’t sold, that I know of. I’d probably put a factory, assembled short block at around $2500.

the trade in for a short block to Texas Speed for the 416 stroker is $500 not including shipping. As more are produced I expect to see stock short blocks local for a grand... depending of course on how many GM this engine is put in.

500 - shipping for a short block core might as well keep it.

Ehh, hard to tell. Someone who pops a piston and just wants to get their car back on the road might pay more than any other regular person. I’d say 2-2500

with the rod out the side, many times it will be more than a short block...

I'm back to thinking of either putting a forged bottom end in my Camaro or doing a 416, the 427 is really for bragging rights and it will require a sleeved block with little to no rebuild potential. If I go the 416 route I'll jut buy it from a vendor as the trade in for my short block is not worth it and Texas Speed is down the street from me. If I decided to build an engine on the side then I would consider buying a short block and putting in forged drop-ins plus new rod bolts. So lets look at cost:
$5400 + $200 shipping = forged 416 short block outright
$2000 for stock short block + pistons, rod bolts, etc + 350 private party shipping = $3850

Given the above you can see that most people with bucks will get a built short block with stroker, studs, balanced, forged pistons, after market rods already decked, honed and assembled. For $1800 more and maybe sell their own short block for $2000 meaning that the assembled stroker is actually $200 cheaper than putting forged piston in the stock short block. As there are more LT1 in more vhechles and more guys that do the math I would expect sub $2000 short blocks.
