6th gen ZL1 or another 5th gen?

Hello guys I have stuck around the fifth gen site since my first new ZL1 in 13. I sold it then bought another 13 model then sold it and bought a 15 model. I kept it the longest but I was offered more for it than what I paid for it so I sold it. I have been wanting a 6th gen now so I have been reading the post here about everyone's experience with them. One thing that caught me off guard is I read someone's post telling people not to buy a 17 or 18 model because of oil pump failures in the ZL1's. Is that so? I only saw one post about that. I was thinking of a 17-18 model but now if there is a problem with that I will have to go to a later model or go back to the 5th gen ZL1. Anyone know anything about the oil pump problems on 17-18 models of the ZL1?

There's a much greater chance of oil pump failure on the 2017 and 2018.

https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showt...light=oil+pump

I see no reason to go with a 5th Gen over a 6th Gen except that the 5th Gen is a little roomier inside. Both can be built to be very quick but the 6th Gen chassis is better and weighs less than a 5th Gen.

I wouldn't be afraid to buy a 17 or 18 zl1. The issue is the timing chain damper or guide moves on some and causes the chain to saw a hole in the oil pump. On the 19's they updated that part but I believe the actual oil pump is the same. Either way there is no way I would go 6th gen all day. You need a bit more power with a 5th to be as quick as a 6th gen due to the A10 gearing and weight loss.

I have an early production '17 ZL1. I traded in a '13 ZL1 for it.

Z OH 6 is absolutely correct. The 6th Gen chassis is far superior to the 5th gen. However, to get some of that stiffness, you lose a functional back seat. Not that the 5th gen had a lot of back seat room to begin with but the 6th gen's back seat is pretty much useless for anyone taller than 5' 2''.

The interior quality of the 6th gen is also far superior to the 5th gen. It still has a lot of plastic but it's better put together. I never could understand why people complained about the 5th gen's interior being cheap plastic. After owning a 6th gen, I now understand.

There's also a lot of standard features such as heated/ventilated/memory seats, blind spot sensors, automatic climate control that the 5th gen doesn't have.

With the 6th gen you're gaining 70 more horsepower and dropping about 250 lbs when comparing coupe to coupe. The m6 gearing is better on the 6th gen and of course you get the A10 if you go the automatic route. Both big pluses.

The trunk opening is narrower in the 6th gen. There have been complaints that a full set of golf clubs won't fit through the opening. The trunk is pretty deep, though.

Yes, there have been oil pump failures. Mostly in cars built in early to mid 2018. As you know the volume of failures tends to get amplified on these forums. The percentage of pump failures compared to the number of cars built is a very low percentage.

If you can live with a non-functional back seat and narrow trunk opening, then don't hesitate to get a 6 Gen ZL1. It's a far superior car versus the 5th gen.

I would get a 6gen ZL1 as opposed to a 5th gen ZL1!

Bigtime53, not sure what you expected, this being the 6th gen site , but in case you came here for encouragement, go for the 6th gen ZL1, it's the best Camaro you'll ever have had.

Below are 2015 and 2017 ZL1 Acceleration times. Notice how much faster the A10 is in the 30-50 and 50-70

Gonna need you to explain to me how the 15 ZL1 takes longer to do 30-50, than it does 0-90.

The gen6 LT1 or SS is typically faster, from 0 - 60 mph and 1/4, than the gen5 ZL1.

I'm actually in a different situation than the OP. I'm looking at what's maybe coming down the pipeline and wondering if a 2022 ZL1 is a good decision. If the rumors I've read about GM shoving an LT6 from the Z06 as the final farewell to the Camaro in its current form, I don't know if I'd want to get into a ZL1 right now as a Z06 powered Camaro will most likely drive down the price of a ZL1. Seems like every time there's a more powerful version of something, the less powerful versions loses some of its value. Granted, the ZL1 is already a performance bargain, but if a Z06 powered Z/28 comes to fruition I figure either I'd look into that, or look at the dealers trying to discount the ZL1 because of the new big boy on the block.

These are simply just rumors. I see a 0% chance in GM putting any LT6 in any camaro. For one, its designed for mid engine platform, two they arent going to use their brand new engine that is in high demand for corvettes in a camaro.

After owning a 2012 ZL1 I can say it’s possible. The A6 is not geared optimally for the ZL1 and it’s slower to downshift. The A10 from everything I’ve read is much more responsive and tuned to match the LT4

Of course they're rumors, but I can't imagine if this is the Camaro's last few years as a non EV that they wouldn't try to do something special. Of course, the Cadillac CTS5 V Blackwing has roughly the same hardware that the ZL1 has, so I can't imagine them sending the ZL1 off with a bang and not doing something similar or more spectacular for the CT5 V blackwing. It's all speculation, but I like to consider all the options before making a decision, especially a $70K decision.

I have a 2012 ZL1 (with a Hennessey package) and have a 2022 ZLE ordered after I drove a couple of 6th gen ZL1's. The 2012 is a great package but 10 years of engineering improvements delivers a seat of the pants difference that is hard to quantify. The 6th gen feels lighter, more nimble and honestly more capable with a hp disadvantage in my test cases. If you drove a stock 5th gen and a stock 6th gen back to back, I think you'd agree with my assessment.
