I know dealerships had a tough time at the start of Covid (that mostly impacted sales staff being let go) but with Autonation (among many other dealers) just reporting all-time high profits, this feels like just greed capitalizing on the shortage as dealers increase margins so they're working less but making more money on each car... Would love to be proven wrong but if so, feels like a sad state for the industry...

Most dealers around me are adding ADM to in stock or ordered vehicles. About $1,500-$3,000 depending on the vehicle. $20k-25k for in stock C8 Corvettes.

Autonation was fair and sold me a new ZL1 at MSRP minus any incentives plus Vroom/Carvana money for my trade. I couldn't find anyone in my area that would honor supplier discount though. I think the dealers that would like return customers once we get past all this will sell at MSRP. Steer clear of the dealers that are price gauging. I understand with short supply they need to maximize profit per vehicle but MSRP is enough when you factor in financing and service profit.

Have you seen the used prices? Folks with 2-3 year old Camaros are getting about what they paid for them new. A 2018 Camaro SS with 25k miles is worth about $40k right now. If you want a new car right now the only smart move is to use the top dollar you will get for your trade and buy at new at MSRP or below to offset having to pay MSRP. For example, if you assume you normally get $5k off MSRP on a new Camaro but now you are getting $8k more than you normally would for your trade in. Also factor the sales tax savings on the trade if permitted in your state.

If you don't have a decent trade to profit from then it is probably best to wait until supply level start returning to normal, which looks like it will take a while. Eventually, supply levels will improve and prices should come down but with the Camaro nearing end of sale I wonder if it will help or hurt resale values. EVs are still pretty boring to drive so far so I am hoping the desirability of a V8 muscle will still be strong even if gas is $5 a gallon.

I ordered and bought my 2SS from Schumacher Chevrolet of Denville, NJ (same parent company) in 2018, and it was a very pleasant transaction, my salesman was a pro who played no games, and the dealership honored every aspect of our agreement. The finance guy, when I showed him the loan preapproval from my bank (hint, hint) with a better rate than their initial deal, spent a few minutes making calls and then matched my rate plus offered a $2k cash discount if I financed with them. Their service department treated me like royalty from day 1, they understood this car was very dear to me and only let their senior Corvette technician work on it. Yes, he did the oil changes himself, too, believe it or not. We are still in contact with the service manager even though I now live in Tennessee.

All in all, while I know not everyone that reviewed them on google had the same experience, mine was impeccable and I can recommend them with no qualms. The principle of treating others like you want to be treated worked well for me.

After test driving the LT1 this past month, I got absolutely hooked.

Either a 2022 or 2023 SS if still in production is looking like the route I’ll take with the hopes dealers aren’t sqquuueezing customers for every dollar later next year.

The gas mileage on these cars are better than my lifted truck and honestly very impressive.

economics is a pretty deep subject but at the end of the day, supply is low and demand is either flat or elevated which plays out well for dealerships. 1.5 years ago when covid hit, you certainly didn't see people begging to pay more for a car knowing dealerships were taking it on the chin...

bottom line, if someone doesn't like the price or deal, don't buy it. it'll all come around again when this inflation period we're in turns into a recession or depression.

100% yes. Hell, a good dealer will require little or no deposit and it will be refundable too. Run, don’t walk from markups and "situation milking dealers".

Just read an article that gm will be shipping many of the '22 models (not Camaro's) without heated seats and steering wheels simply to get them out to the dealers due to the chip shortage. That's how bad it's getting for them. I would never buy a new vehicle that has a leather interior that did not have heated/ventilated seats.

Not all dealers. The larger dealers that are still getting their fair share of allocations are able to sell at MSRP. They are also flipping all the trade-ins and probably making more profit on them than the new vehicles they sell. Factor in financing and service revenue and they will survive.

Although, I am not sure what happens to GM dealerships in a pure EV world but for now they will survive.
