Data loggers/systems

Apologies in advance if I missed a thread about this but I swear I looked.. lol

What kind of data recorders/systems integrate best with our cars? I know everyone says PDR but I don't have it. Would adding it be best, if possible. Or maybe moving to something like a full AIM or Motec setup? I currently use an AIM Solo 2 DL but was wondering if anything can go deeper than that.

Thanks in advance!

i used an obd extension cable snaked under trim/etc into the trunk area to short switched obd cable then to a race capture unit. plenty of space to mount a device there and then run gps antenna to a usable location.

I don't track my car, but it appears some folks use Garmin Catalyst and are happy with it: https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=582558

I believe the HP Tuners OBD reader can record everything the ECU sees, What are you looking to record that the AIM DL cannot?

yeah what he says, what else do you need that you don't have in the SoloDL? The full AIM dash will only have the ability to add more sensors but what other sensors do you want to have?

HP tuner is great for logging everything in the ECM but can't use it at the same time as the AIM and you need to have a laptop in the car with you...

I’m a huge fan of the simplicity of the Apex Pro. The community vibe is awesome, as you can share data between cellphones. Also had OBD2 integration and video capture (uses your cell camera).

I'm really happy with Race Capture Track hardware feeding SoloStorm on a tablet for autocross, but there are a lot of good systems. Some are better than others in certain use cases. It's finding the one that's going to work best for you and how you want to use it.

PDR is awesome for the zero effort instant review between runs and if I had to replace my car, I still wouldn't buy one without it, but it's value is limited beyond that compared to other solutions.

I use a banks IDASH for data logging it plugs into OBD2 port and sees everything the computer sees-- Data goes to SD card for review

Also works great for multi gauge -I use for seeing Ethanol content

It depends (as mentioned) about what your goals are with data? Capturing data to see how the car is performing or capturing driver inputs.

The Power of the PDR really comes to lite when paired with Cosworth Pi Toolbox. Not the GM Toolbox. But you'll need to learn how to configure the graphs etc. HiPo Driver on youtube has some tutorials. As long as you don't edit the PDR file, Pi Toolbox will be able to see all the CAN channels and you can look at anything you need on the CAN Bus. Create math channels so you can turn suspension displacement or steering input into suspension velocity and steering velocity. It's a very powerful tool if you take the time to learn it.

We tried using something at some point, but I guess it was the GM version? There was some info available, but not much. Using it was pretty clunky.

You're talking about this version?

Found a Windows computer to try it. Definitely more capable than what we tried before.

Yes, Pi Toolbox is amazing once you learn how to use it. The lite version lacks some features but it does what most hobbyists need from it.
