It shouldnt sag. Its bolted to the car. It reduces lift at high speed. You can do as you please, if your car doesnt see the track at all you wont notice a difference.

These parts have to be flexible (or flimsy) as they oftentimes come in contact with curbs etc.

It’s like an old school hot wheel track. Great for our parents to whoop some ass back in the day.

9000 miles on mine, hard miles, no sag. Hard bolted to the car. Some scrapes on the edge but nothing out of the ordinary. Make sure yours is fully bolted to the car.

I'm reviving this thread for a reason:
The dealer failed to install the center air dam on my 2023 ZLE. I could do it myself, but would need to obtain the pop rivet and tool that are required in addition to the 12 screws. But I notice that URBAN LEGEND's photos in this thread show that the rivet, which goes exactly in the middle of the air dam (the point of the triangle) was omitted on his apparently with no ill effect. Doesn't look like the air dam is sagging at all. So I'm considering doing the same, which would also make it easier to replace the part when it wears out. |

Probably not critical
I’d bet the rivet is intended to be an assembly aid to position and hold the part in place during installation of the screws.
It can be difficult to locate a screw hole and start the screw when all of the parts are black, the part is an awkward shape and not rigid. Also if the screws have the captured washer, it is difficult to finger start them, so you need to try and balance the screw on the driver while getting the parts to line-up and find the holes. Add to this that you’re working overhead (if on a lift at a dealer) or on your back (the home mechanic) and it can be a bit of a pain to get the install started. I’ve run into this a couple of times when installing under body parts. In the end it’s always doable, but makes a 30 minute job 40 minutes. Not an issue for a DIYer, but the time could add up for the crew doing dealer prep work across multiple vehicles at a dealership. It’s easier to capture the rivet on the tool then slide the part over the rivet and blindly find the center hole on the car and drive the rivet home. This positions and holds the extension in place to drive all the screws without having to locate their respective holes or hold the part. A tech will have access to the necessary tools, and the time savings for using that extra fastener is probably a measurable metric when a tech gets X amount of time for dealer prep. |

If you look closer at the enclosed pix, you can see this was installed prior, most likely during original assembly. The washer indentations from the bolt installations are clearly visible. Maybe it was taken off for shipping and the dealer failed to re-install it.

Thanks for the replies! Saves me the trouble of either installing a rivet or going back to the dealer. Plus no rivet means easy replacement if the part is damaged.
My air dam shows no signs of being previously installed. |
