Exhaust + Beginner Mods
Hey everyone, this is my first post on a forum, so if I do anything wrong, please let me know. I wanted to do a muffler delete on my camaro v6 but Ive heard from a few people that it sounds bad. I was wondering if anyone has heard/has a video of a stock non PP exhaust with a sec cat delete. Last thing I wanted to add was, what are some beginner mods for some extra power? How much can a tune add to these cars? Thanks

MRT v2 is basically as close to a muffler delete without going full delete as you can get.
MRT v1 is a step closer to a muffler but i'd use the word "muffler" very lightly. You can probably find plenty of sound clips of those on youtube. I would not go full muffler delete without some kind of resonator or you will get garbage sounding exhaust that's way too loud and you will almost certainly get pulled over or your car keyed by everyone who lives near you. the only other beginning power adding mod you can really do (exhaust is not a power adder) is a gauze intake filter ...either drop in or cone (cone requires a new intake). You could do DIY ported throttle body and all if you want but I'd probably look towards suspension mods rather than think you'll be able to get a bunch of hp from the car. Chevy didn't leave a lot on the table. There are tuning options. Trifecta has probably the longest experience with the V6, but there are others too. No tuning option is going to be cheap. I'd do the intake, switch to an exhaust that sounds good to you, put on some drop springs and focus on cosmetic mods until you're ready to do something drastic like supercharge it. |

@Cellsafemode
Not to hijack the thread but while on the subject, I've completed all the cosmetic mods I've wanted to do and replaced the CAI and exhaust. I'm now aiming to supercharge the vehicle and curious if replacing the stock hood with one with a ram air scoop would be advisable while adding the supercharger? |

Muffler delete doesn't sound bad if you leave the rest of the system alone. Most of the examples I've heard of the muffler delete were on the 6 gen v6 facebook group though. I have the MBRP axle back right now, which is a muffler delete with j-pipes to reduce drone and I think it's a great sounding exhaust.

Please do not do a muffler delete. It sounds awful with the V8, embarrassing with the V6. Get a cat or axle back or have a good muffler shop custom fit your exhaust. For every person who convinces themself that hacking off the muffler sounds good there are 20,000 laughing behind their back. It’s too nice a car to make it sound like a 1960s Checker cab.

On a related note, is exhaust wrap worth it and do you do the entire system?

From what I know about how that works, performance wise, I dont think it would help at all unless you were running a great deal more than stock power. And even then the gain wouldnt be very big. But im no expert and could be wrong

I've been running with my 500 dollar axle-back mrt system and it's plenty angry sounding with no rasp and no pops. The way i likes it.
I've had the entire mrt axle-back wrapped for over a year now. It increases exhaust output temp by over 100F just at idle (measured with temp guns, before and after wrapping). Does that equate to better performance? It can't hurt...but i have no idea how tiny of a benefit it makes. I just felt like doing it and i think it tends to keep the water condensation from the exhaust from pooling in the mufflers and keeps them drier. At least that makes sense logically and from observations it seems to work that way. Temp stays close to water's boiling point when idling at the tailpipe tips. Not sure i'd recommend wrapping though if you live in an area that rains a lot or snows, or you get wet a lot under the car. Wrap that's not hot enough to dry itself off fast can hold water against the pipes longer than intended and hotter pipes oxidize faster. |
