Possible tire size

2020 RS running the stock runflats. I have 245 45 20 now...Prob going to change tires. Saw a camaro today with 285 45 20 on it. Looked great. Would this combo work for me. Thanks

That size tire is going to be about 1.5” taller than your current tire and you’ll need a 9” to 9.5” wide rim. You’d be better off with a 275 40 20 which will be identical height but wider for you

Not a good choice for the stock RS wheel

I’ve been looking at this lately and it seems you can only go up 10 in width on the same rim with same profile. So in your case you could probably do 255/45-20 on the OEM rim. The higher the profile (2nd number) you can fudge wider widths but then overall diameter starts being a problem.
245/40-20 is stock tire on the front of an SS, and people here have reported going to 255/40-20 without an issue.
If you get to a point where front/rear diameters are much different you also start getting issues with Stabilitrac faulting (so I’ve read here).

You’re not getting it. A 40 has less sidewall than a 45. A smaller sidewall has less tolerance for a rim not wide enough for the tire. The bigger the sidewall gives the tire more distance between the tread width and where the beads are to “squeeze” together to fit the rim width. As the sidewall gets smaller in number, the rim need to be as wide as the tread width because there’s not enough flexibility in the sidewall to squeeze to a smaller width.

Bottom line, the max you’re going to get on that RS rim designed for 245’s, is 255, and you need to stick to the 45 profile, not step down to 40. If you want to get 275, you’d probably have to get to a 50 or 55 profile, and that overall diameter will be too big for the car. Won’t fit in the wheel wells for turning and suspension travel, and speedo would be 4+ mph off at 70 at least.

I doubt any tire shop would even try to mount a 275 on your stock rim. If they do, they’ll want you to sign off that they’re not responsible for anything.

Steve65, check out this thread that is just one of many about wheel and tire sizing: https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showt...6#post10961266.

On the same note, I recommend that you heed TP2SS's advice: if you want to go that wide safely, you need new, wider wheels.

You could get 1LE rims and run 285/30/20 up front. That’s what I have with no issues. I may even go to 315s in back as the 305s look a bit small on those rims.

Tiresize.com is a good website to check out when wanting to change tires and wheels on your car or truck. You can compare your stock tire size to other sizes that will work with your stock wheels, tire revolutions and speedometer readings. Help this helps you Steve.

Had an interesting find this weekend...

Bought a set of '19 OEM SS wheels from a member here that had tires on them put on by the dealer that sold him the (used) SS. One looked really "off" as the rim was sticking out well beyond the sidewall, almost like the lowered ricers with the canted setup and rims way wider than the tires (absolutely dumb look, IMO!). Tire sizes were all correct (275 & 245). Got them home and looked closer and it turns out the dealer had put a 275 on an 8.5 rim, and a 245 on an 9.5 rim...bass-ackwards. But only these two were wrong. Guess they didn't notice the car had different wheels front to back and, well, had a 50/50 chance 50% of the time, and got it half wrong! In fairness to the seller, it was not his fault, and he didn't even notice it. He told me later it was a Dodge dealer...LOL.

Anyway, while the 245 on the 9.5 looked weird, the 275 on the 8.5 looks nearly normal, and has been driven that way for about 1000 miles. Based on that, I'd say you could go two sizes up and probably be okay, at least in terms of treadwear. Not sure I'd push performance on a tire two sizes up, though.

So, could probably get away with
265/40R20 on the front 8.5's
295/35R20 on the rear 9.5's
