I've had the slow starts from time to time for a couple years now. 2016 SS. Original battery. Turned motor off to get gas. When I tried to start it up dead battery. I got a guy getting gas to try and give me a jump. After several try's the smoke was coming from around the starter. I replaced the battery and it struggled to start but did. I went home and got my wife and her car so we could drive off and it struggled to start but did. I drove it home. Shut it off. As a test I tried starting it back up right away. Worse, won't even crank. Starter?

There is new starter from GM that is made in the USA. That works 10 times better than it did before. GM# 12691976. About $140.00 4 hours to install at home.

I would also replace the two stater relays in the fuse box under the hood.
When stater starts going down it puts a lot of stress on them.

Had starter replaced by local small shop. $460. He said there is an even more updated starter than the one listed above. Not sure what the part number put in but it fires up really fast and strong now.

Does anyone know if either of these new, improved starters mentioned by Nightfall17 and wal-dog are OEM on newer Camaros?

I've just taken delivery of a 2021 SS and am hoping I don't have the older design starter (2016-18?) that seems to be giving forum members trouble.

YES

i have had the same slow start issue. i had the battery replaced under warranty. but the problem persists, among multiple others. i read there is a class action lawsuit involving all camaros from 2010 on ... has to do with heat shielding around the starter; the suit alleges GM knows about it. it is easy to google.

so ... i too am having grief with my '16 SS, as will detail in another thread: i want to see if many others are having systemic electrical failures in all sorts of places -- infotainment screen failure, coolant temp sensor failure, radio intermittent failures, gate opener glitch/fail, windshield washer pump failure, and the slow start issue. sheesh, IF i even remember them all. very frustrating. very, very disappointing. i loved camaros and this is my fourth one. all v8's of some type, a 1986 z28, a 1998 z28, now my 2016 SS, and a '78 305 berlinetta, i think in college. they were all great until this '16 SS situation. ran my '98 z28 for over 200k miles. loved that damn car. new one? very disappointing.

How do you get in on the suit? Mine is a 17' I had my starter sound a little weak maybe 3 or 4 times over the 3 years I bought it new, but it always started on the 1st try. If its a known issue I want to sue for a replacement on the updated starters.

Is this still a problem for 2019s, 2020s and current model?
