Lightbulb 1965-1966 Mustang Fastback?????

I am TRYING to look for a 1965-1966 mustang fastback to buy and build to my liking, I have done the usual looking on Ebay and classiccars.com. But people must be watching too much T.V. (those auction shows) they believe they have some rare ass car.

So, My question is this. What are some better ways to search on the internet for used old cars. Private owned that is.

Those shows probably have some influence in that way, but I can tell you that for my entire life I have been looking at cars that need restoration that the current owner thinks is a 100 point car.

My father and a good friend are the restoration guys around here. Their specialty is mid year Corvette's, but they have done a butt-load of old Mustangs. We find this to be true too often. People don't know how to value their old car, because all they know is that they saw one at the Auburn auction go for $85 grand, or they know a guy who has the "same car" and paid $75,000 for it. They fail to mention that their floor pans and fenders have more empty space that was once occupied by sheet metal than there is sheet metal left on the car!

We have been trying to buy a 1968 Shelby GT500 for about 20 years. And for 20 years the thing has fallen into worse and worse condition because it just sits next to a guys garage, getting beaten down on by the sun, rain, snow, neighborhood cats, you name it. The owner will sell it to me, he just wants full restored value for it. To me it is basically nothing more than a serial number. Almost every part will need replacing or restoration.

That story is so common it is the rule, not the exception.

Best bet is to keep your eyes open and wait. In time you will find a deal, but it will take patience.

One other piece of advice, don't buy something that is out of your skill level or budget for repairing, or you might just become that guy who thinks his project car is worth more than it truly is worth!

Mmmmm, I had to research that one. I thought 1966 was the first year for the Fastback.

I've always found word of mouth to be the best way of finding something. Get to know the Mustang folks.

Thanks for the information. I have built from the ground up a 1969 camaro SS, Two 1968 broncos and a few mopars. I can do it all but the body work, so I am just looking for a good shell, want to make a street car out of it anyway. so was even thinking a 6 cyl to turn into an 8. I live in Florida and there is not much but rust here. so word of mouth is kinda not that great. And yes they made fastbacks in 65.

I was really looking for some site links.

Try looking at Autotrader classic. I just looked and there seems to be some on there.

As for the Dynacorn body shells it is important to remember they are not factory cars and will have a state assigned vin number. 15k is also a bit much for a bare shell with no other parts. I feel you can find something for around 20k that is solid and a real car with all the parts that you will need to complete a car. I really don't know how someone would advertise one of the new body shells for sale once it is completed, to a classic car, the vin dictates the value and these cars are not "real" classics.

On another note, the ones that I have seen are not exactly like the originals and I have yet to see any put together that did not require some kind of modification to make original parts work on them.

Either way, good luck with your search.

Thanks a bunch, I guess the waiting game will continue. been looking for a few years now. I guess when the time is right it will be right.

Also, arn't the "new body" mustangs just in the year 67? I like the earlier ones much better.

I think you are correct. I believe I saw that they are coming out with a 69' fastback body now but not the early cars.

You guys have swap meets down in Florida? Over here in SoCal, you can often find somebody selling something rusty at one. These restoration and auction shows definitely screwed up the market. Not to mention the people who were formerly house-rich... I remember not that long ago, people wanted like $100k for anything from the 60s in nice condition. Prices are probably half that now... I'd think the other parts of the market will calm down too.

The newspaper is a source but you will waste a lot of trips looking at overpriced junk.

My advice - you need to bring 2 things with you: A flat bed trailer and a stack of Ben Franklins. Never offer them much but always flash the cash and see if they bite. Cash and a trailer are strong motivation for some sellers. They may say they want a lot for it but some times that $500 cash (or whatever) in thier hand in exchange for that rusty eyesore in the yard maked the deal look more much more appealing.

-Mark.

Thanks to all for the information. Still looking and looking. I did find one, locally. It was in pretty good shape but he wanted something like 25k. just was not worth it. O well. maybe I will just take a trip and look for some property in northern New Mexico area and I might stumble onto one out there.
