Which Melling to go with???
Will be doing a cam swap next month and looking to see which Melling oil pump to go with? I have had two good shops tell me opposites. One told me to go with the High Volume (10296) and another to go with the High Pressure (10295). Had a third shop tell me that they are pretty much the same thing. What have you cammed guys been going with?

Use the high volume and it will come with a spring to do stock volume. Never been a fan of high pressure.

There is no reason to run high volume or pressure on a stock engine.

I am not an expert but just went through this with the guy building my short block, who is one. (Bryan at LME). He is sending me a Melling pump with the engine which is checked over and ported, but runs stock pressure and volume. More volume isn't needed except for high rpm engines and should be used with a larger oil pan. Its rare but apparently there is a risk of running the pan low of oil. High pressure is not needed with stock bearing clearances and can damage seals. This is what I was told and it makes sense to me, so I'm going with it.

The only way your gonna run the pan dry is if you don't have enough oil with this pump or your driving upside down.
I've done many 10296's and have yet to have a problem. Volume yes, pressure no.

Is yours broken? Did it wear out?
Unless you're running higher than the factory operating RPM range, or you built a motor that has looser bearing tolerances... why change it? They all have the same style reliefe piston so there is no fix if it gets hung up there... Just because people sell them, doesn't mean you necessarly need it. I don't buy the "its insurance" pitch. Insurance against what? Never heard of 1 LS engine going down from oiling issues with a perfectly fine OE oil pump.... and you never will either. From the 315hp LS1 to the 436hp LS3, they are practically identicle. |
