I headed your warning and just lightly squeezed the tabs and it slid right back and off.
The cover won't go back on with the lead from the battery tender attached to the terminal.
This spring I'll modify it with the band saw or something similar by cutting out a key way along the top.
If it doesn't work, I'll just say screw it.

I'll one up you, I broke both tabs, one right after the other, the very first time I went to take it off. I assumed it was becuase it was 0 degrees out at the time, but maybe it had nothing to do with it.

I now believe the tabs are made of ritz crackers.

Great thread! I'm gonna see how many tabs I can break and get in there and hook up a CTEK pigtail if I can manage it. I will then route the cord up to an outlet on the garage ceiling in order to avoid giving any mice a handy ramp up into the car in the form of a cord on the floor that goes up into the car.
