Rock cracked windshield all the wa to edge
Just got hit by a rock. It hit just under the windshield wiper and has radiated to the bottom edge of the windshield, and up far enough to be "longer than a dollar bill".
My insurance company is listing several auto glass repair places for a complete windshield replacement. My question is, wouldn't it be better to have the dealer do it? I have a hud, if that makes any difference. Also, if a specialized repair place is recommended, any suggestions?

I don't know if the dealer would install it themselves. They would likely have a auto glass place do it for them or recommend who they use.

Your dealer has a collision center? If not find who do their collision work.

never had HUD before, but last year i took my pilot into honda dealer and the glass i got was safelite. if insurance is paying for it then i would take to dealer and ask for gm glass.

The dealer is going to just sub contract the work out. I would get on google and look at reviews for local windshield shops. I took the time last fall and found a top notch shop based on reviews.
Given the Camaro is so new I doubt there will be anything but GM glass available. |

I believe the HUD requires a special windshield to work. Be sure they provide that to you.

Sorry to hear that :(
Having the HUD only changes the windshield itself. It's a much more expensive one, labor and all is the same as a regular windshield. Since insurance will pay for it, take it to a top notch collision repair shop in your area. I am sure there are at least a couple of them. |

You might have an issue getting a windshield. They are hard to come by. My buddy is waiting 2/weeks now. Good luck. BTW, let a glass specialist do it.

As stated above, the 16's are so new aftermarket may not be available. You can try Optic Armor performance glass co. You might be a "Test Mule" for their company?

This may seem unrelated but... How did this happen? Was it highway driving or back roads? Were you following closely to a truck? Do you think it is the time of year and there is still a lot of crap on the roads? I have been back and forth on using some type of paint protection for the hood etc.. Please help!

Thanks, everyone. I was afraid of the window being hard to find... there appear to be very few spare parts of any type.
I hadn't thought of collision centers. I'll definitely call around and see what's local. Makes sense the dealer would just sub it out to a glass specialist, but I've never had this happen before. Ironically, I was not following too closely. I chose not to put xpel on the front, and have just been leaving a lot of space between me and any vehicles in front. I noticed a lot more "sandblast" effect if you leave the normal separation (1-2 car lengths). You can hear it, even. I'm pretty sure a moron in a beat up 5th gen did it. Yup... one of our own, so to speak. Busy traffic, he was weaving in and out. Got in front of me, and then floored it. At highway speeds, I -heard- him do it, and then saw the rock come flying back. No way to avoid. Gave up all of its energy on impact then rested under the wiper until it slid off. In addition to being concerned about what this will do to the structural integrity of the car and future issues with leaks and such, I'm trying to find a place that'll be careful of the paint when they do the replacement. Watching videos on youtube of windshields being swapped make me NOT want the guys that'll come to you to do it.

Interesting. I'll google. I like the name. Any idea if this would be a stronger replacement than factory part?

When you get it replaced install clear plex on the windshield. It is a clear bra for the windshield.
