Timing chain
I am getting ready for my cam swap soon. I am going with the small Texas Speed 225/236. How necessary is it to upgrade the timing chain? Car has 70k miles. A few years ago I installed a cam in my friends 2010 SS using the original chain, with no problems at all, however the car only had 14k miles.

Like he said. It is cheap. You'll find a 50/50 mix on here of who changes it and the tensioner vs who doesnt. It's more work to remove the oil pump so you have to decide of it is what you wanna do.

The oil pump removal is the main reason why I am asking this question. Looks to be a pain in the ass to remove because of oil pan clearance. I already have everything I need, (C5R chain, melling pump, & LS2 dampner) I am just wondering if it is totally necessary. Thanks for the comments/suggestions.

I did it on mine, had ~40k miles @ the time. Took me an extra hour but was worth it.

Did you have to drop the oil pan?

I didn't do it and have 10k miles on my cam. I wish I had done it though.

Loosening the pan and replacing the oil pump and chain is not that hard to do. Just be patient when doing it.

Yes... was not as bad as I thought. Thus the extra hour.
Here is my build thread where I started that part: https://www.camaro5.com/forums/showt...=385577&page=8 -Don

you have to loosen the pan bolts and drop the front of it down.

I will add that everyone also recommends replacing the oil pump due to possible failure. Goes right along with what everyone says. Might as well because you're in there

Only 33k miles on the motor at the time. https://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=523981
