Stock 2020 LT1 vs. 5th gen ZL1

So I had a 5th ZL1 cut me off on the way home from work on the interstate.. I’m lucky enough to have a very short interstate commute to work every day… Long story short I can get a little carried away sometimes especially with cars I know can actually hang… that being said the ZL1 tried to give me the sauce and surprisingly to me… He didn’t have it. Can confirm Stock LT1 gaps a 5th ZL1 at a 70+ roll… I’m assuming because of weight and transmission. Me being relatively new to the car scene and LT1 platform.. this was really exciting and made my day to know that my car would perform that well.

On paper the 5th gen ZL1 and a 6th gen SS/LT1 put down pretty much identical times. Kind of disappointing for the ZL1 (or maybe the 6th gen just performs that well). But yeah the 5th gen ZL1 is a pig, something like 500+ pound difference.

Power to weight ratio is an amazing thing.

I bought a new 13 ZL1 and took it to 1/4 miles drags many times. The first pass in my new 16 2SS beat my best ever ZL1 time by 2 tenths and was consistently ran faster.

My experience was that the gen6 SS has the advantage getting off the line due the gen5 ZL1s weight and the torque making traction difficult. Once the ZL1 got rolling, it pulled harder and I think would eventually overtake a SS.

I wonder if the ZL1 owner had a manual and didn't drop gear enough for the speed

Gen5 ZL1 coupe weighs 4,120 lbs

Talk about a Heffer, that's basically challenger/charger weight. My '20 LT1 is sitting at 3580 lbs bone stock sans muffler.

It gets worse with auto trans and convertible.

Fun to hear for us LT1 guys, but I wouldn't even try it with a 6th gen ZL1.

My 2020 2SS A10 convertible weighs in just over 4000...heavier than my 2014 2SS M6...it is what it is...

The 6th gen SS/ZL1s are stupid powerful stock for the money and even more capable with a few mods.

The 5th gen SS/ZL1 were powerful at the time but haven't really aged well because of how heavy they are. Aesthetically I think they hold up well, but interior-wise they're pretty rough looking nowadays. I'm pretty sure the V6 6th gen is fairly close to a 5th gen SS stock for stock - I'd still pick a 5th gen V8 over a 6th gen V6, but the alpha really helped, performance-wise for those who want a v6.

After owning a 5th gen M6 ZL1 and 2 LT1 powered M6 gen sixes my 2016 M6 2SS ran a low 12.3 stock and ran just about exactly like my 2015 stock M6 ZL1. Same driver same track. Of course the auto 5th gen ZL1 can run low 12s which makes it just as fast as my best LT1 runs.

My LT1 (comparing close 60's) is at least a tenth faster than either the 5th ZL1 and 2SS.

And my LT1 was the only one running 115-16 MPH. To be fair to the other 2 Camaros the LT1 is running a Rotofab dry CAI which is worth +5 RWHP. There is half a tenth of the difference.

On the street I doubt I could tell the difference. All three felt fast on the street.

I remember when Mark Reuss said the 6th gen SS performance was comparable to the ZL1. He wasn't lying.

It's not something that jumps off the stat sheet because the SS has less horsepower...but it's just as fast at a lower price.

I do. He was correct ...plus a much better interior.

If you like the ZL1 today, you’re going to love the SS tomorrow. Think about that from a philosophical standpoint.

I sold my ZL1 and placed an order December 2015 for a gen6 2SS MRC NPP

The 5th gen ZL1 is heavy, but apples to apples the Hellcat variants of the Challenger weigh 4,500+ lbs. The hemi 5.7 liter (entry level V8 Challenger) weighs 4,100 lbs with a manual. The 392 Challengers are ~4,275 lbs with the auto.

The Charger is about 100 lbs heavier than the Challenger across the board (+/-).

The 5th gen ZL1 despite being heavy, still has a better power to weight ratio than a 6th gen LT1 Camaro. That extra power should also be more obvious as speeds climb. I'm guessing he wasn't in the right gear, or something else happened. They should at least be even, I wouldn't expect an LT1 to gap a 5th gen ZL1.
