SS Driving lights turn off...

Why do the driving lights go off when turn signals come on?

The DRL turns off due to regulations. It's physically too close to the turn signal bulb for both to be allowed to stay active simultaneously, because white LEDs would overpower the turn signal bulb and increase the risk of it being unnoticed, thus also the risk of accidents.

IMO a switchback solution would be a bit more elegant (and is available from the aftermarket).

It looks dumb. I had a guy on Harley in front of me in the left turn lane waiting at the light get off his bike to tell me my left headlight was out. I thanked him. When I got home I checked it then realized what saw was my driving light out because my turn signal was on. It looks like you have a light failure everytime your turnsignals are on during daytime driving.

Correct. FMVSS 108 has language on distance as well as intensity.
