The car's wifi works without onstar service. However, you need the onstar app and onstar working in order to configure the car's wifi.

Regardless, it would be unlikely that wifi android auto/carplay will work without a significant update to the car's software at the very least, since it's unlikely they coded the hmi with the foresight to handle a wifi data connection for "projection". The wifi is handled by another module and the hmi would have to essentially be listening on a network connection vs seeing a usb device directly connected to it.

Unlikely.

Now, if a usb dongle was created to act as a low powered wifi access point and translate the wifi "projection" it's receiving from your phone to the expected USB device connection ....then the hmi wouldn't know the difference and it would work as expected. Regardless of if you're using wifi "projection" or cabled.

Exactly. There's a chance wireless Android Auto will be backwards compatible with a software update. Almost 0 chance for wireless CarPlay with Apple's strategy of planned obsolescence.

The dongle idea is cool. Maybe someone will run with that.

Actually, they both have the same requirements. But most of all, neither Google or Apple will update their software to work with MyLink. That's not how it works. GM would need to update MyLink, and for that, the QNX software that they use. To my knowledge, there may also be a hardware limitation for both. I believe the Wi-Fi needs to be in the 5Ghz band for it to work, on top of needing dual link modes.

Which is sadly a moot point for both. While GM has been cool in the past, and updated MyLink for the Android Auto feature to add it, they wont do that with wireless. They'll release new cars with the features instead. At the end of the day, they need to sell new cars. They're not going to do that by adding stuff to sold models.

I highly doubt GM would update for Android Auto though, and not for CarPlay either way. Again, it has little to do with Apple/Google from here. It's on GM. And GM is a car manufacturer. They don't mind as much on cell phone features.
