You can probably sell that to one of those YouTube hacks to "repair"

Oh man.. that sucks.. don't know the answer to your question, but call your insurance right away since I assume you didn't report anything to them when it happened, since you didn't notice any damage. Then go to the dealer and find out.

Report it to your insurance company and they will send an adjustor out to look at it or you could drive it to a good body shop and let them check it if you don’t want to get your insurance involved. I don’t think the car is a total but I’m no expert either in repairs. Good luck!

Whether you report it to your insurance company is up to you. That's why we pay crazy insurance premiums. But, you can almost be guaranteed that with that report to the insurance company, Carfax will make a report which may have an effect on your cars value at some point.

I just went through this on my C7 Z06 with a hit & run collision at a car show. Damage was a slight crease in the lower rear bumper cover. The GM oem cover was $700, body shops estimated $1100 and $1500. With my deductible, insurance paid out $600 so I ended up replacing the cover myself. I didn't 'fix' the damage, I replaced the cover with an oem cover so it was as new.

But the Carfax report said the damage was to left rear fender and rear bumper fascia, which it was not. I've tried to get Carfax to correct the report to no avail. The insurance company of the hit & run driver won't even respond to a diminished value discussion.

If the value of the repairs is expected to reach beyond a certain threshold (something in the order of 60-75% of the fair market price of your car in your area) then it would be total'd. It's been a while since I've been in the industry, but if that strut tower is a service item (and it likely is), it might be repairable. That looks like a cast-part and there are usually procedures that are outlined by the car manufacturer to correctly replace a specific part. If you can get a part number for that tower, it is serviceable, and depending on the value of your car, it could be repaired.

If you're automatically thinking frame damage, that might not be the case. Too many people get caught-up in automatically thinking that. I've seen damage I never thought would be repairable come out just fine. As long as repairs are performed competently by the manufacturers guidelines, you'll be just fine. They wouldn't expose themselves to that kind of liability if they didn't already provide repair documents.

You'll likely get no where regarding compensation for diminished value. That could vary by state, but you'll likely just end-up having to take the loss, unfortunately.

no insurance yet taking it to a body shop see what they say first. If its to much $ to repair correctly then total it. I didnt get hurt and hope its enough to pay off loan. cant believe a 3 inch crack can render a completely new car totalled. Sucks

if you cracked that, there is likely other stuff you damaged that you haven't noticed.

It can be repaired. The appropriate part number is 84755796, which retails for approximately $400. Replacement will be laborious, but your vehicle is certainly not totalled.

I recall a story where a guy had a brand new C7 and ran over some road debris that dinged some frame component. It was barely noticeable and the car drove fine, but it was totaled as it was not repairable and was considered a safety risk. If that tower is not a separate replaceable part I don't know how they could fix that. But who knows - curious what you find out.

Not totaled ...not even close. But like i said, i'd be suspicious of other as of yet undetected damage.

I agree that the strut tower should be replaceable. I would make sure to use a very highly regarded, extremely competent shop to replace it seeing as it looks to be cast aluminum.

I wonder if that's a designed fail point? I'm not necessarily thinking it is, but maybe GM figures if something if going to have to fail in a big impact the strut tower may be the easiest piece to repair.

If this is fairly common on these cars you'd think an aftermarket company would try to cash in and design a brace of some sort to reinforce it. Kind of like Billetflow and Steeda did to reinforce the aluminum diff cover on the IRS equipped Cobras. They actually worked pretty well at supporting the cover and keeping it from allowing the rearend to grenade itself.
