Installed Barton adapter and shift knob on my 2011 6MT LS3

I'm posting this because I've been researching here for about 3 months and I noticed that no one has posted the info straight forward.

First of all, this post is in case you want to change the stock manual shift knob without having to install a short throw or make any major modifications (like cutting threads on your stock shift rod).

All you do is buy the adapter ($50) plus one of the knobs Barton sells (either $60 or $40). The adapter and knob will have a 3/4-16 thread pattern. I was not able to find a 3/4-16 knob anywhere, so you might as well buy it from Barton.

The stock shift rod measures about ~0.551 inches wide (~14mm) when measured with a caliper, that's why the adapter has to be 3/4 in wide (around ~19mm). So there's no way around this unless you install a short throw shifter.

Everything can be purchased here:

Please see pics below on how it looks after I installed it, and what it looked before the install.

Bottom line, I wish GM would've made the shift rod threaded so we could change the knob without having to spend $150+ on a short throw or a different rod.

There is a way to thread the original shifter rod.
It worked for me.

Yes, I definitely saw your post from 7 years ago and I have to say it was great and very well detailed. I even bookmarked it in chrome for future reference , however because I don't have a tap and die set and didn't want to go through the hassle of threading the original rod, I just went with the adapter and knob combo.

I posted this so the people that don't feel like threading the original rod know there are other (simple) options.

I will definitely consider threading the original rod when I get tired of this knob. Thanks for your input!

I bought a Flameball. For the Camaro they come with a bushing and three set screws.

I have this Barton shift knob installed on my car and it was a breeze to put it on. My problem is that I had to crank it pretty hard to get the knob in the correct position and now I can't unscrew it. I must have gone past the actual threads, I hope I never have a reason to remove it.

You should have used a set screw to stop the knob at the right position. If you can, I'd recommend you looking for a set screw on ebay or a hardware store and installing one. You never know when you'll have to remove that knob (to fix something with the rod linkage or something) and you want to be sure that it will come off when it's needed.
