Gen 6 vs 4?
Hey folks, I'd like to get your opinions on the gen 6 zl1 compared to the 4th gen z28's.
In the early 2000's I had a 95 z28. I liked the early rpm torque, but felt like the tail end wanted to swing around a little too often. Was wondering how the newer zl1 1le's felt in comparison. Recently sold off a 560ish awhp mustang dyno EvoX to grab something new (specifically 2029/2020 zl1-1le). Originally scoped out GTR's but seemed pretty bland. I really liked rowing through the gears and I'm sure I'd miss it. I was pretty fixed on the AWD aspect at first, but after watching what others had to say about the 1le, it won me over a little. Tech has came a long way since the 95 z, but day to day do you get a lot of unexpected loss of traction surprises that might not pop up on a test drive? Thanks! |

The difference between those two cars in their perspective trims is night and day to say the least lol. I have a 4th gen 2000 SS, that's about 700 hp, and could beat a 6th gen ZL1 in a drag race, but that's about it lol

I had a modified Gen4 Z28. Setup for track, better brakes, suspension and powertrain.
I currently have a Gen5 SS 1LE and have driven the Gen6 SS 1LE and ZL1 1LE. The only advantage a Gen4 Z28 has over both the Gen5 and 6 is less weight. The Gen 6 is leaps and bounds better in every category. The Gen6 Camaros put down the power pretty well, especially compared to Mustangs. Once you drive a Gen6, you'll wonder why you even bothered questioning the two, haha.

I had a Procharged 99 SS and a stock 97 Z/28. No comparison is possible. That is good. Imagine if the gen 4 was still the pinnacle?

I have a 97 TA with about 440 RWHP. The 4th gen chassis is no comparison to the 6th gen. I also track my 4th gen on slicks and modded suspension. My personal best time at the local road course in the 97 on slicks was beat by my jone stock ZL1 by my 5th lap on my first day out. Then I went back with a track alignment and better brake fluid and really pushed the ZL1 and that's when you really feel this cars capabilities. The 6th gen chassis is incredible when being pushed to the limits when compared to pushing the 4th gen to the limits. It does a pretty good job of putting down the HP as well for a RWD car.

I had 2000 Camaro SS, a 99 Camaro Z28 and a 2001 Camaro SS. All combined, I spent 12 yrs building/racing those cars. I currently have a 2018 ZL1-1LE. Here's a comparison between the 2 generations in question:
Similarities: - They both have bowtie badges Differences: - Literally everything else Seriously, they're not even the same car. After decades of being shamed and teased by every automobile publication on the planet, saying that American manufacturers can't build a car that can handle/corner like an European sports car, GM engineers said, "Here, hold my beer". The ZL1-1LE shut EVERYONE the F' up. It is a world-class performance car, straight off of showroom floor.

I had a 1998 SS LS1 6 speed that I modded with SLP parts and GMPP parts that I enjoyed owning for 11 years and last March 2019 I bought a low mileage 2017 ZL1 that is no comparison to the ‘98 SS. You’re talking 15 years from 2002 to 2017 with advances in technology, hp, suspension, chassis, etc that really can’t be compared between the 2 gens of the Camaro. And of course natural aspiration verses supercharged LS1 to LT4. Of the Camaros I have owned, the first a 1982 Z28, the 2017 ZL1 is the best in my opinion and of course the fastest and best handling of the ones I have had over the years.

Pros to the 4th Gen:
Very Affordable...might be the best bang for buck platform Cheaper to mod Less electronics TCS system is much less intrusive Lighter Not a Pro per say but the 4th gen is the Last generation of what I would consider a muscle car. Pros of a 6th gen: Better chassis Smoother ride Puts the power to the ground better More comfortable Excellent handling and braking Drive-train is pretty stout from the factory. So less "upgrading" is needed to support more HP. I would argue the 6th gen is the best generation Camaro ever built. 6th and 1st are close, followed by 4th then 5th gen.

Currently own a ZLE, and its my 6th camaro, 1 third gen, 4 fourth gens, and this one.
92 G92 Z28, 350 TPI 93, 94, 95, 02 z28, LT1-LS1 Those cars were all modded up, and fun when I was a kid. After experiencing vettes, , mustangs, M3's, every SRT line imaginable other than hellcat (including SRT-10), sportbikes, harleys, side-by-sides, jeeps, trucks lifted and lowered including 18 model Raptor... All that to say, not bragging on what I've owned, but bragging on this car, this is hands-down the best car I've ever owned, FOR ME. That is including the 66 Plymouth Belvedere vert with a 440. I though the E92 comp M3 I had was the best chassis I would ever drive. Oversteer at the limit was smooth, controllable, and very easy to control the angle with my right foot. At the time, I was blown away by what I thought would be the most amazing driver's car (even better than the E46 comp M3) because of the chassis, even though it was slightly heavier than the E46. I was wrong. This car takes what I give it, and laughs at me. It's actually quite dangerous for me personally, because I don't have the skill to push this car to it's limit. Finding and straddling the limit on everything else I have owned was actually quite easy, even on the GSXR-750 and R1. -Jeremy |
