I have the Ruger 10/22 with a 50 shot clip, good for shooting gophers.

Oh im 13 now, but dad has a stevens model 1915, i should take it out and shoot.

I'd say go for either of the marlins. I've shot both and they're both great guns. I prefer the 795 because of the removable magazine vs the feed tube on the 60. I've got a Remington 597 too thats also pretty good. It tended to jam out of the box but once I took it apart and filed everything down and deburred the internals it works absolutely flawless. Another good key to reliability in a .22 is the ammo.... most of them tend to be picky about which ammo they like. CCI mini-mags are a little more expensive but I've never had any issues with them.

I've got a Marlin model 60, picked it up at Scheels for $100 used. Great little rifle, it has a squirrel engraved in the handle

Great for plinking, though I did have it jam a few times when I started firing rapidly. Good accuracy in the limited ranges I was using it at (no further than 100 yards i think), so I'm curious how far out it will maintain it's accuracy. Bought a $60 scope from wal-mart, forget the zoom levels, but I have yet to get that sited in.

Ok. So I got my gun, and its very nice. I'd strongly suggest the Marlin to anyone thinking about one, and the 'SS' model looks like a gun worth triple the price you pay.

The gun comes with a gray laminated stock.... and I was thinking of putting a thin layer of varnish over the stock of the gun in order to A. Make the gun shine and look even better than it already does and B. protect the wood

Does anyone know what I should use in order to accomplish this without harming the stock?
