Pretty impossible tire budget, IMHO. $1000 really gets you very little for an 18 2SS. You can do that all day long for some basic B 4 door sedan with 14/15/16" wheels.

I just priced stock sizes on tirerack.
BFG's come in at $960 for 4 tires
Generals at $890
This is without any rebates.

These may not perform like contis or michelins, but I would not consider them unsafe. Frankly, they are far safer in the cold and wet than what comes with the car, IMHO.

Add in tax and mounting/balancing/disposal of the old ones...like I said, $1K is hard to live with.

Addressing the OP, I think it's important to point out that all-seasons are really only required for genuine winter weather: ice and snow. You absolutely don't need all-seasons just for rain, and you most definitely don't need them for a Gulf Coast location like Houston. What you really needed were some top-notch "three-season" tires such as the Continental ExtremeContact Sport or the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. Those two tires are extremely good performers in dry, warm weather (just one notch below the OE SC#); but they are the two best wet-weather street tires you can buy. Yes, better on wet roads than any all-season tire. And they work fine down to temps in the 20s, which is all you would ever need in H-town.

That said, the General G-Max is a pretty good all-season. The two best, by far, are the Continental ExtremeContact DSW and the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4. They will perform considerably better in dry/warm weather and at least somewhat better in winter conditions (which again, never happens in Houston).
