Even if they left the power output the same, any new GT500 (or whatever they're going to call it) will outweigh the GTD by so much as to make it all but impossible to match any of the GTD's performance metrics.
Although, "the masses" also don't/won't necessarily even understand that. All non-enthusiasts see is "big numbers go brrrr" without knowing anything that underlies everything else involved. But there is some precedent of a later hi-po model "outpowering" a previous specialty model in the likes of the '03-'04 Cobras outpowering the previous, but same gen, 2000 Cobra R.
