Recall - Improperly heat treated half-shaft on my 2021 LT1

Just got a letter from GM that states my left half shaft was likely not properly heat treated and it needs to be replaced.

Interesting that it's only the one (their "left shaft machine" wasn't working that day?). Anyone else see this letter yet?

Our half shafts are asymmetrical, so it makes sense if only the left one is subject to this recall. Good luck

Thanks! It's being inspected next Tuesday & I'll update this thread. I'm also curious how many other 6-ers here have the same possible issue.

And... my car is affected. The Chevy dealer does not know when parts will become available, so I'm just going to keep driving it like normal for now.

I got the same "love" letter in the mail yesterday for my '21 SS.

I am wondering why this is a safety issue and therefore a recall?

Honestly, my letter did not use 'recall' at all. The language was pretty vague. My service advisor wasn't real worried about when the parts arrive & made it sound more like the heat treatment was more for corrosion purposes.

I got the same notice about my 2021 SS - it doesn't say it's a recall (which usually has the connotation that "the government is making us do this"), so it appears to be voluntary.

I wonder if someone actually broke an axle and they're doing this to avoid warranty claims for all the damage a broken axle would cause.

They haven't been as concerned about the same potential damage when the half shaft bolts/retainers have backed out. There is a TSB, but they will not cover this under warranty unless it scatters all over the street.

So, they make you buy new bolts/clips/whatever yourself unless it fails catastrophically?

That's the general consensus. Many of us have bought the new hardware, longer bolts, and the retainers, and replaced them ourselves. I would imagine some have paid to have the dealer do it proactively. I would like to hear from someone who has had it covered without the street mess.

It is most likely a specific lot run of the part number in question. That would mean that the issue is isolated to a small number of 2021 vehicles. Probably discovered in a recent random audit, and they were able to track it down to a specific lot of parts. The dealer would be informed via a TSB how to determine if your half-shaft belongs to the affected group. I used to do this stuff 30 years ago.
