Honda Civic runs record time at Nurburgring
These are crazy times when a 2.0 Liter Honda Civic can run 7:43 at the ring...

I read about it earlier but didn't check the Green Hell times to see where it stacked up. All I took from it was that it was now officially the fastest FWD car at the ring. Also I'm one of those weird people who actually like the new styling of this (it's a very love or hate design among the Honda community I've noticed).

But at the end of the day, it's still a Civic.

its like 2.5 sec slower then a 5th gen ZL1 on the official nurburgring list.
Although its faster around that track then a V10 R8 AUDI, 911 GT3 RS, and a Zonda C12S, insane. |

i considered a 2008 Civic Si, as it came with some legitimately good track parts.
It was a much better track platform than Camaro's then, just saying... Civic chassis is pretty damn good, going way back. Double wishbone suspension, light weight. Add a good LSD and you've got a competent package. 2008 came with an LSD, and I'm sure this new turbo Type R does as well. But the Mazdaspeed3 at the time was that much better, and a useful hatchback for family duties. Conical LSD, equal length driveshafts (big deal for a FWD car). Very good chassis and a damn strong turbo 2.3l direct injection 4 banger. So much torque, even stock it was pretty potent on the track. It was relatively slow on the 'ring in stock form, at 8.42, but it came with dinky 215 so-so tires. Fast forward to my 1LE - it's going to take me some work in this Camaro to match what I could do in my lightly modded Mazda at the track. My problem with Civics, is the average Civic "enthusiast" is not for me. You Camaro folks seem alright, sure you come with bias to all things Camaro but that's only natural. Good luck to you track folks, I know from experience (on the winning side) how annoying it is to be slower than a "crappy import" :P Now it's my turn to be the slower one in a heavy muscle oriented car. |

Chevy needs to prep up a Turbo-4 Camaro and set things to right... |

The long straights where horsepower shines will only get you a few seconds, each corner can lose you a second. Road racing isn't just about power.

I wish they would have done an enthusiast version of the Cruze hatch. Really like the design of it (I have an unhealthy obsession with hatches and wagons) and think a Cruze SS with 300 hp would be great. Clearly Chevy can make a very competent and great performing front drive 4 cyl, Cobalt SS (turbo), but don't think the bean counters would let that fly. Either way I will be test driving a Type R when it is released. Well if I can find one that is.

Great thing about a car like the new Civic Type R, the chassis is likely incredible - a few upgrades later (turn up the boost, and/or add meth, and/or bigger turbo) this car will be making people cry at track days. Sure same can be said of many cars, like the Camaro. |

Ugh, weak sauce tires on the Type R too:
245/30 Continental SportContact 6 The Civic fanboys will use that as a mantra. |
