dealer gave you misinformation. the onstar navigation for your current rout is sent to your car by onstar. Onstar updates their maps. If you bought the mylink nav you have to pay gm to update it.

I should have bought a ZL1

Not completely accurate. GM does not do map updating. There is an outside company that updates maps for all nav systems. They send you a navigation update disk for a fee (around $150 + or -) and you do the update yourself. They then give you a test destination that wasn't there previously to make sure the update worked.

Can anyone tell me whose map data the Camaro system uses? There has to be a way to jailbreak and update.

Here, is the name of the company that manages the map updates for GM. My 2014 truck uses the same nav update system.

It’s a USB sent to you, that you plug into the car. It takes approx 1 hour to update the system. The car must be on/running for this to work and will reboot the MyLink system once done.

Free updates are rare by manufactures.

What does suck is no multi vehicle discount. It’s 139.99 each for my truck and Camaro. I typically do an every other year cycle for map updates. My 14 truck “due” this year, Camaro next year.

The name of the software company doing the updates is literally called "Here". Sorry if I didn't word it properly. You can find them at this website: gmnavdisc.navigation.com

It is VIN specific unfortunately.

Can someone who has one the the USB sticks with an update (doesn't have to be the latest) plug it into a regular Windows computer and capture the list of files present on it and then PM me about it? I am thinking that if I can take a look at some of the files that I may be able to help us make map updates without having to spend so much.

I turned in a Dodge Charger R/T for the Camaro SS and all we had to do was buy a compatible Garmin and copy the files from it to our cars. I would think you could do something like that here. So when I turned it in, it had 2018 maps. But like most have said, I just use Waze.

If anyone has purchased the update and wants to send me a disk image, I would love to poke around and see what the encoding is like / whether the vin can be changed / etc. I highly doubt they are doing anything especially advanced here.

Mods - Apologies if this post is against forum rules, I read through them again just now to make sure and didn't find anything explicitly prohibiting this post. Please remove and point me in the right direction if needed.

Presumably a more regular feature in the annual updates would be to expand minor roads' speed limit coverage and to revise the businesses/POIs and what not you can display on the nav screen. Still not a great reason to spend that kind of money for an update, in my opinion.

I've had a Garmin for about 8 years now. There are at least two map updates per year, and they are free with the higher end Garmin units. The updates include not just roads but also businesses. Recent updates have added a lot of details like perimeter roads at shopping malls etc.

My Garmin is conveniently mounted to one of the center dash vents on my Gen5. I don't see a similar location on Gen6. How do people mount their Garmin on the Gen6? Other than suction cup or beanbag on the dash, both of which I consider unacceptable and dangerous.
