5TH GEN VS 6TH GEN, BUYER SEEKING OPINIONS

Hey y'all. I am currently looking to get into a 16-17 SS, prices are down around mid 20's now which isn't too bad. I've already driven a 2016 A8 SS, a 2020 M6 LT1 camaro, and a 2020 A10 LT1 camaro. However, I have no experience in a 5th gen. It seems like they are a little harder to come by in my area. I was EXTREMELY impressed with the 10speed camaro. Probably the fastest shifting vehicle I've driven to date, but the newer Camaro's that have the option for the 10 speed are just a little out of my price range.

So, I'm on the fence of getting a 14-15 5th gen and a 16-17 6th gen. I like the interior in the 6th gen a lot, quality definitely seems to be better. As far as motors go, I know the LS platform like the back of my hand. How is the LT1 holding up? Is it able to take much boost on SBE? Does the LT1 have any problems that I should look into before purchasing an LT car? And as far as trans goes, I saw something about the 8-speed auto having problems? Ultimately in the end I think I'll wind up in a 6 speed car but I would appreciate any advice.

What are the pros and cons between the two generations? Looking forward to hearing from you all. Thanks.

To me the interior was the key point, I couldn't stand the 5th gen interior. But I fell in love with the 6th gen.

I have read a lot about issues on the A8. Get the M6

6gen all the way! I had a 2010 2SS that I really liked but when the 2016 Camaro came out I bought a 2SS in April 2016. I kept it until March of this year when I found on Cars.com a 2017 used low mile ZL1 that i just couldn’t pass up due to the price and the mileage. The 6gen is a very different Camaro as compared to the 5th gen and to me the 6gen is much better and refined. My advice is to get the 6gen!!

And you might consider a used ZL1 with the 10 speed auto or a 6 speed like I have. The 10 speed is much quicker but I like to row thru the gears and be in control of my ZL1. A used ZL1 will be more expensive than an SS but it is supercharged vs the naturally aspirated LT 1 in the SS.

I wouldn't consider a 5th gen at this point.

Had a 2015 SS vert and traded it when a 2017 SS vert showed up at a local dealer. Had my issues with the gen 5 and the auto L99 was a dog. VERY happy now! It's a bullet.

I've owned both. I bought a new 2011 2SS and owned it for several years and sold it and bought the 2017 2SS. Both great cars and both have their downsides and upside.

I liked the styling of the 2011 and the more retro look, It rode well. Good highway car.

1. The L99 was lacking for the amount of weight of the vehicle.
2. The 6 speed auto was very slow to shift. Waste of time to even think about the paddle-shift or tap shift they called it back then.
3. Weight, It about 300lbs heavier than the current model
4. The steering wheel on the 2010 - 2011 was a boat wheel and not very ergonomic
5. Interior was cheap looking, a lot of plastic on the doors and dash

GEN6

I've also owned Corvettes and this is the closest thing to it with a back seat. Handles great, fast off the line and feels fast to drive. Rides very nice. MRC and I love the aggressive look of the car but it still has a profile of the vintage Camaro. I haven't heard of any major issues with the LT1 motor. It's the very same motor used in the C7 Corvette and very solid. The SS does come with a Track Warranty as well, keep that in mind if you plan to track the car stock for a while.

1. The car is lighter but that comes from it being downsized about 2" each way
2. The A8 auto and shutter issue. ( not all have it and it seems the trans flush and new fluid has addressed the issue or manual are out there if you like to shift
3. A little smaller back seat ( not that anyone could fit in my GEN5 the GEN6 is smaller.

Overall I enjoyed ownership on both GENs, Find a GEN5 drive it and see what you think, I'm not sure you can go wrong with either one.. It all in what you like

After owning a 5th Gen 2011 and two 6th Gen's- a 2016 and a 2017 I's go for the 6th Gen all the way. My 2011 was an SS, 6 speed manual. Heavier than the 6th Gen, you sit very low and the visibility is not as good as the 6th Gen. The 6th Gen is more crisp and handles better. Also the gas mileage in my 2011 SS was 14-16 tops, even on the highway. The 6th Gens get much better gas mileage.

My first 6th Gen was a 2017 RS, V6, A8. I'd recommend staying away from the A8, I had so many of the famed shudder problems and with the dealership I got rid of the car. I now have a 6th Gen 1LT, M6 and love it. So I would definitely get a 6th Gen and get M6 or A10. Yesterday I was behind a turbo 4 I think 2020 Camaro with A10 and he pulled away from me in my V6, M6 and I could hear how fast the transmission was shifting. I could never keep up shifting my M6 that fast. Very impressive and very quick. Even though I love manual if I were to buy a new one I'd probably opt for the A10 seeing how quick that Camaro was yesterday.

If you need a back seat for anything I would consider the 5gen. They are also easier and cheaper to mod which can be more fun. The 6gen is a better car all around though. Its lighter, handles better, and the LT1 makes more power.

I wouldn't consider a 5th gen unless it's a ZL1.

The 6th gen is a vastly better car. It has less interior room and you may prefer the 5th gen’s styling. Apart from that you would be getting a faster car with better handling and more up to date tech.
