Cam swap Always pull engine?
Just wondering if pulling the engine is the way to go on a cam swap.
What are some going rates for this kind of service. |

I pulled the cam out from the front... I did drop the pan, only because: If you pin the chain you won't have enough room to rotate the chain off the back of the timing gear. So DON'T PIN THE CHAIN TENSIONER. I did create a guide to make sure it went back to TDC here is a pic. You can see the alan wrench I used to pin the tensioner on the left.
I would say a good mechanic would take dunno 12 hours? The heads have to come off to change the lifters so port them at the same time. I took like 6 days of part time work, but really had no issues. It really was about as easy as a LS1 Camaro.

My guy didn’t pull the engine and I think it was 14 hours... it was his first 6th gen he’s done so they took a little extra time.

12 hours with a good mechanic? Like one with a lift that does it for a living? Damn, no wonder everybody pulls the motor out.

Pulling the engine isn’t necessary. But I’ve heard the pan needs to be dropped. Is this true? I’ve done a few LS cam swaps and they were a breeze. Is the LT engines much different?

I did drop the pan, but I'm told that if you don't pin the chain tensioner you can rotate the chain off the cam gear. So I at least 99.5% sure the pan does NOT have to come off, just don't pin the tensioner, see my pic above.
