Thumbs up Camaro SS 10-Speed Possibly Spotted in the Wild

Quote:
By Patrick Rall Oct 23 2017 - 4:25pm

A Chevrolet Camaro SS test car driving near the GM Proving Grounds in Milford, Michigan sounded very much like it was fitted with the 10-speed automatic transmission from the Camaro ZL1,
supporting rumors that the high volume SS package would be getting the new high tech gearbox.

--------------------------

The other day, I was driving through Milford, Michigan near the GM Proving Grounds when a 6th gen Chevrolet Camaro SS pulled onto the road in front of me.
There are lots of test cars running around Milford and this one looked like every other newer Camaro test car, but it sounded very different.

The engine sounded the same, but the driver was shifting a ton – far more than I was in the Hellcat Challenger that I was driving.

The rapid shifting leads me to believe that this Chevrolet Camaro SS test car was fitted with the new 10-speed gearbox from the Camaro ZL1.

In speaking with some Camaro insiders, there are rumors that the 10-speed will soon be offered with the LT1 in the SS package and
those insiders agreed that it could have been a drivetrain test mule with the new gearbox.

The LT1 was singing and the shifts were clear and crisp, leaving little doubt in my mind that this Camaro had a 10-speed transmission.

No confirmations, but I think we all knew it was a matter of time or will be a matter of time before the A10 hits the SS.

Ehh, if that actually was the pic of said A10 SS in that article, I would think it would have camo on it. Aren't the 2019's getting a refresh? Unless they are testing the A10 in a current year SS. Not sure if GM would do that. Otherwise it was probably just the author's imagination.

With that said, I think most believe the 2019 will get the A10.

OEM's do this all the time. New powertrain in old gen mule, send the drivers out to gather telemetry, adjust calibration, rinse-n-repeat.

Since the Mustang GT is getting the A10 I would hope GM would be right there with the SS, but wouldn't be the first time GM dropped the ball concerning the competition.

It has been speculation and bordering on common sense for a while that 2019 will get the 10 Speed.

If it's just a powertrain tweak there's no reason GM can't stick it in existing cars for testing.

^^^ This all day. ^^^

Often the timing that the powertrain guys need to get vehicles to test new engines / transmissions runs ahead of the timing of available properties for the new vehicle, so initial testing is done with mules developed from the prior gen or similar vehicle.

Keep in mind that Ford and GM co-developed this 10-speed. Ford was first to put it in trucks, GM was first to put it in cars (ZL1). Both are in the process of ramping up to full volume, so expect that they will prioritize which vehicles get it when. Hint....ZL1 aside, profit margin for Camaro is no where near profit margin for K2 pickups and utilities. Camaro WILL get it, pickups and utes will be (and have been) getting it first.

You are correct, but I think they will both get them for the 2019 model year, unless for some reason they just can't meet the demand needed for them. The GM trucks are all new for 2019, and will have the 10 speed almost guaranteed. The 2019 refreshed Camaro should get it as well....that's my educated guess and what I'd bet on.

These TC shudder issues are probably going to expedite the transition of A8 to A10 for all models.

Yes - the whole Camaro lineup gets the A10 for the 2019 model year
