Mounting a remote mic for GoPro?

I'm using a GoPro on the typical suction cup mount on the small driver's side window. I'd like to get an extension and remote mic to place somewhere around the rear of the car so I get minimal wind noise but good exhaust sound. Anybody have tips on where to mount the mic and how to route the extension cable?

Good luck, I bought a Purple Panda external mic. and moved it all around my car and still got wind noise. I would pick a spot and then go do a test loop. Then download it and listen to the audio. I put in the glove box with and without the wind sock. Tried it in the passenger foot well. In the truck under the rear speakers. In the very back of the truck. And even in the trunk under the the carpet in the area buy where the tire inflator kit is. Every location had some wind noise with the windows down which is required for most HPDE events. The motor sounds were good. But I never could eliminate the wind noise. I researched this and it seems like the best audio without excessive wind noise is to mount the mic on the outside of the car on the rear bumper. Just don’t cut your mic cord when you close the trunk.

I am definitely thinking somewhere outside the car around the rear bumper. A friend of mine mounts one inside the bumper cover on his BRZ, and he gets pretty good results.

Anywhere on the back bumper works well for me. I did pinch my mic cable after like 15 trackdays though(had to buy new one) . So maybe look for a way around that. I'm thinking of mounting the entire recorder outside or drilling a small hole from the trunk to behind the bumper.

I did some testing with an external mic on various placement spots around the vehicle.

I'm using this mic and a wind sock.

For me, given the car is supercharged and I wanted to hear blower sounds, the best spot is in the glove box. This is what it sounds like in the glove box.

However, the cleanest exhaust sound I was able to achieve was taped inside the trunk to the hard black plastic panel with some gaffer tape. Anytime I mounted the mic on the rear bumper, the sound was just too loud and would be distorted.

As far as routing the cable, I use this extension and tucked it up under the center console along where it meets the carpet and ran it to the glove box. My GoPro is mounted on the roll bar, so I don't have to deal with any wires above the dash area.

I stick mine near license plate.

I run cable through interior and tape it along body to minimize cable slap.

There is windsock/muffler over the mic to minimize wind noise.

Same, tape it to the license plate frame. I do it every track day.

Okay, I have a 15ft extension, adapter, mic, and windsock on the way. I'll experiment with inside the trunk on that back panel and outside on the bumper or license plate. Thanks.

Mine is clipped to my rear license plate. Sounds good with zero wind noise.

I was just going to come here to say I clipped mine to license plate frame and it works amazing but I see others have mentioned that. Also helps to have a windsock on it to help with the buffeting.

With long enough cable you can route it down side of windshield for extra supercharger noises

Have you been on any race tracks where your speeds will be over 100 mph and still no wind noise?
