This is a misconception we see a lot. The factory stuff is generally the hottest. The factory cast iron manifolds are basically heat sinks that retain he and take a while to cool down. Also, stock the cats (which get pretty hot), are much closer to the engine.

When you go stainless headers, even if peak heat might be a little higher, it does not retain heat like the factory cast iron. Also the cats are moved under the car and further from the engine. Because of that, uncoated headers run a little cooler than stock.

The best is coated headers, which you can touch 10 minutes after a drag race.

We have a great free coating special going here-

I have the same starter blanket. I was having heat soak issues with the starter with the stock manifold after about 2-3 20 minute track sessions so I figured while I was in there I might as well...they are cheap. My Kooks Headers also came with heat reflective tape for the starter so even Kooks knows that it is needed.

I used DEI spark wire boots for mine and I can tell they were needed because there is limited space with the headers being so close to the boots.

I wonder if porting stock heads would help vs aftermarket

Also what are boot sleeves?

Thanks for the input.

Pretty much just added peace of mind. As mentioned the boot sleeves just protect the spark plug wires from contact and the heat of the headers given the close fitting.

Not sure. I removed the stock headers during replacement with lth and stock starter heat shield and then fed the heat shield wrap around the starter. Took a few minutes and some patience to feed it up and around and get it where needed. Don't have a mental image of it anymore with the headers in place from underneath, short term memory, lol. My memory tells me you would need to remove the factory starter heat shield 2 or 3 bolts if I remember right, but may be able to do with headers on, just a pita.

Sorry but the Camaro does not have cast iron manifolds. They are a mid length tri-y stainless header with heat shield bolted to them. The engine bay doesn't get nearly as hot compared to uncoated longtube headers.

Yes and to add to what king said, peak temp is 95% of the issue. That’s what will melt things. In stock form it is designed to run indefinitely without melting components. cool down time is really insignificant to components compared to running temps

We have been dealing with Jet Hot for years and I can assure you it is more than "just paint"

Would you say that a good coating on headers brings it manageable or "safe" levels?

my two cents;most paint/powercoat shops offer ceramic coating services, just so you know.

i always have that done and it seems to hold up great. it is expensive though, especially because of the complexity of long tubes.

like CSP was saying, you can touch the coated stainless part shortly after running it. pretty nice stuff

Been using Jet Hot since 1987, WAY better than most I've seen.
