A8 question.
I was told long ago by a mechanic that putting a transmission in neutral when stopped in traffic or long red lights is okay and better for the transmission. Anyone thing this is still true?

The thumbnail is about coasting, but he does talk about neutral at stoplights, too.

Technically, if you are stopped and you put it in neutral you will get very very slightly better mileage since the engine is not having to keep idle speed with the tires not moving.
If you are coasting and put it in neutral you will actually use more fuel since the engine will have to keep its rpms up to match the vehicle speed. If you leave it in drive and let off the gas, the torque converter should be locked up most of the time, this way the tires can keep the engine from dying and the engine can completely cut fuel out. |
